George VI

Is it true he mispronounced his "r"s like that? "Twoops" "Fwance" "wight", etc.

According to Wikipedia, he had a stammer but doesn't mention rhotacism (rounded rs).

If it's true, it's an interesting tidbit.

Yes, he really did speak that way.

It was throughout the film. I noticed it right away. It was only with the "r".

In the DVD commentary of "Into the Storm" the producer and writer said that they did not want the actor playing the part of King George VI to attempt a stutter as they were fearful it might come off humorously and detract from the seriousness of the scenes so they settled on the character talking in the manner heard in the film.

Seeing these scenes of George VI and Churchill makes me want to see "The King's Speech" even more. Perhaps there are scenes with George VI and Winston Churchill together in that film?

Maybe the subject of this thread should be re-titled "The King's Speech".....

And assuming the depiction of George VI was accurate in that film ("The King's Speech" as played by Colin Firth) we'll get our answers as to how George VI actually sounded?

reply

The king did have a speech impediment and was unable to pronounce "r".
