MA styles used by donnie in flash point:

1. kungfu (duh)
2. taekwondo (his trademark jump back kick looks closest to taekwondo kick)
3. judo/jujutsu (lots of them, both tachiwaza & ground)
4. boxing (lots in the fight vs collin)
5. muay thai (knees & muay thai clinch vs that guy from kungfu hustle)
6. prowrestling (lots of suplexes)

anything else missing? feel free to add/discuss

I think you pretty much got it.

reply

reply

um...how about Brazilian Jujitsu?

- rear naked choke
- arm bar
- leg bar
- flying arm bar
- that gi technique he did on Collin Chou with his jacket

reply

Yup, he definetly has used alot of Brazilian Jujitsu in this one.

reply

Which is great! We finally get a martial arts star who's willing to incorporate all of the ranges!

reply

catch wrestling

Heal hook
legbar

reply

Well it's mostly just competition MMA type stuff in an out of ring type environment.

reply

I thought I was one of the only people who caught the catch stuff :).

reply

I don't normally like MMA stuff as opposed to traditional martial arts in films, but seeing Donnie Yen do it made me like it a lot. His BJJ moves were awesome.

Aren't you relieved to know you're not a golem?

reply

I saw some Jeet Kune-Do. Definite nod to Bruce Lee in the final fight. I would like to state for teh record that Donnie Yen is a total badass.

reply

I concur, after Donnie did this film I personally feel it bumped him up to HK action god in my book. The grappling really took me by surprise and it was awesome to see. I hope he does more in the next movie.

I have some theories that you guys might like.

First of all I think he is using a lot more tai chi then we think;

My other theory is that what a lot of people believe to be shootfighting/mma might be wing tsun check out these two videos;

and the other half of this one;

I was also thinking that maybe a lot of the boxing comes from xanda;

reply

Your theories are ill-conceived. In the documentary for this film Donnie Yen talks about mma and Brazilian Jujitsu. He never mentions wing tsun or tai chi. Just because fighters in xanda use western boxing does not mean it isn't boxing. Also, I don't see any similarity between the wing tsun videos and the choreography in the film. For instance, the low kicks in wing tsun appear to be straight kicks, while Donnie Yen uses Muay Thai style low roundhouse kicks.

reply

we know for a fact that donnie yen did not use any wing chun in flash point because he didn't know any at the time. donnie yen trained wing chun to prepare for his role as ip man for his film of the same name. that was after flash point was already released.

if donnie yen had had any prior training in wing chun it would have been very minimal. no grandmasters have ever come forward saying that they have trained him other than ip chun, which was for preparing for ip man. and donnie has stated that the reason why he trained it was for ip man.

This is a rather laaaate reply but...

It's funny that your URL for combined Tai Chi mentioned Sifu Bow Sim Mark who is the mother of Donnie Yen.

I am no expert on any style of fight but "Tony" was pure hell with chairs.
He broke one on a guy at the golf range and went to town with one in the end fight. Definitely WWF style right there.
