Still a good movie if you've never seen the show?

Does this make a good and understandable movie for anyone who has NEVER see even a single episode of the show before? I've barely even heard the name Battlestar Galactica mentioned before. I know literally nothing about it, but the movie has good ratings and I like sci-fi, so... Will it make sense or is a background knowledge into the characters, etc, somewhat essential to really enjoy it?

Spixe,

I doubt you will enjoy the movie without understanding the background and intricacies of the grander story of Battlestar Galactica.

Before watching the show I made the mistake to try to watch both feature movies and was deeply disappointed about the storyline only to find out (years later) that I should have started with the fascinating story commencing with the very first pilot of the TV show.

This is not a standard sci-fi movie/show you will be watching. This is an adventure into deep character timelines and relationships and a desperate conflict between humans and cylons. Once you will start watching this show, you will appreciate every second of it until the grand finale.

Hope this helps and you will like it!

Hi Mike,
A HUGE thanks to you for answering this question, you really helped a lot, it was just the information I was looking for. Again, a sincere thanks for the time you put in to reply. :)

You're more than welcome Spixe. :)

If it helps there are very good and entertaining episode reviews of the entire series. In my second re-run of the series, I am currently reading the "Mark watches: Battlestar Galactica" blogs. Pretty funny and they often provide explanatory material.

Enjoy!

I don't understand why watching the mini series that is literally a prequel to the Pilot episode would be a mistake. The mini series basically was the pilot, and the first episode was not a pilot in any sense of the word with respect to TV shows.

The mini series that started the whole thing is so important that they kept using flashbacks to it in the "previously on Battlestar Galactica" bit that happens at the start of episodes.

You can watch the series without seeing the mini series but there's no harm in seeing it first and really it actually sets lots of things up, particularly with respect to some key Season 1 plots. Its where they reveal that Cylons look human, its where we learn about Starbuck's role in Zack Adama's death, its where we learn the entire backstory of Baltar's involvement in the attack on the colonies.

Not exactly stuff you can miss if you want to know what is driving most of the show's plot.

I expect they meant Razor and The Plan, not the miniseries.
