What's with the low ratings on IMDB?

Seriously! What the *beep* is wrong with people?

I just saw the dvd case at the library and decided to borrow it. It is hillarious from start to finish. As a female American-born Chinese(ABC), I enjoyed it so much that I rewatched it another 2 times before returning it to the library. I really enjoyed the humor and how the main character was/is trying to buck the stereotype. He's also someone who is conflicted and doesn't want to grow up because he's afraid of failure. I really got that part. It felt like the Asian-American writers were talking to me directly through this movie.

Great points for the movie:
- Lol before the opening credits rolled, I love how he's talking to the interviewer about our "genes"
- Opening scene was genius! It set up the whole entire movie about the main character who doesn't want to grow up when he's playing against those little kids on the basketball court.
- Felix, awww....he's such a cute kid :)
- Love the split screen going back and forth between him, his friend, and his boss. "We ain't building railroads for free no more." lol
-"Larry Johnson, who?"
- Haha "How are you going to reach out to your Asian customers? There's like 2 million of us in LA." It's not stereotyping...it's true :). If China was to go to war with any country, it would definitely win because of the massive manpower.
- Cue in the "stereotyped" chinese nerd..and then contrast him with the main character. That was not "hillarious funny" but maybe a chuckle.
- Play on words..."Cha-ching Dynasty"
- The "make money, money, money" chant that he was doing with his friend.
- The fat guy at the store making a comment about why his son can't play ping pong. "He's too lazy...and fat."
- His father singing chinese songs in the morning to wake him up..too familiar for me lol. I love how he bangs on the pan and then chris bangs on the floor.
- Seeing him driving down the streets on that little bike and then when he stops in front of a group of kids on bicycles :P
- His "I speak English" t-shirt is just too funny.
- How he keeps correcting English people when they pronounce his name
- DWA joke(driving while Asian) and Martha Stewart reference
- Orient Express
- His friend in Chinese class
- I love the fat boy...when I was watching this with my mom, she was like "Where did they find such a fat boy?" because most of us aren't that fat :P
- His father lecturing him on ping-pong and then he runs away while his father rambles on...this is almost like my situation with my mom
- The part where his older brother keeps hitting him with the ping pong balls was cute.
- His older brother talking to him about "you need to have a real job".......so similar to my older brother pushing me about interning at a doctor's office when I don't even know if I want to major in pre-med during undergrad.
- "We good at badminton, fencing, stuff like..I don't know, gymnastics and shiat..ping pong man." I had to laugh at that comment. I used to do Tennis for 9 years. I played the sport since I was 4, but hated it as I grew older. I just played it because my family plays it and when I was young, I thought that was cool. When I quit Tennis in 7th grade, I took several years off and tried out for the basketball team in high school during Freshman year. I tried that, but was stuck on JV so I just left. Then, I did Lacrosse, which is my calling now :). My parents dislike it because it's not an "Asian" sport since it's too dangerous. I don't really give a frak what my parents think anymore.
- His comment about his friend playing the accordian and ending up in tech support
- Lol @ Chris finding out that his crush is Felix's sister.
- The scene with his mother surrounded by other Asian friends gossiping...too similar to what my mother does almost everyday.
- Boba..means "man boobs" in Chinese...LMAO!!
- I love the "I Like Cereal" song
- The biggest nerd kid was funny. I love how he's always "calculating" things in sports and then his plans backfire on him.
- The fat kid keeps on eating
- Lol at how he gets to play with 8 seconds left in the game and they're leading by a bunch of points. That was me on JV basketball..wasn't my sport. I'm good at shooting, but I suck at dribbling. Just get the ball on a breakaway and dump it to me and I'll shoot it in.
- The father hitting the son with a ping pong paddle...so much like my parents when they get mad at me for doing something I wasn't suppose to do. Except, it's my mom that wants to hit me and my laid back dad that protects me from my mom.
- Flirting, epic fail! xD
- "A loser is someone who takes Chinese class for 3 years and is still scared to order dinner at panda express."
- His friend saying "his basketball smells" instead of "his basketball sucks"
- LOL boys choir, flower arranging, calligraphy, abacus, mental math, etc.
- Haha "Rocky theme song" when he starts training
- Oh god, it annoys me so much when Americans think they had "Chinese food," but they really don't get the real stuff.
- "BS Chang is about as Chinese as Charlie Chan." "Charlie Chan isn't Chinese, is that true?" "Man, you a dumb@ss *beep* you know that?"
- LMAO..ping pong shorts!!
- Golden c0ck...enough said.
- Love how the white girl is explaining her name and job title to the chinese broadcasters..."Cheryl, not shee-lo, Cheryl Davis."
- Haha they're practicing ping-pong with their...uhh...privates.
- "Downtown to Chinatown."
- "Official language is AMERICAN"...haha...American?? Isn't the language called English? =P
- Verbal ejaculations....
- His new girlfriend, Felix's sister, throwing a cinnabun at him ^_^
- End credits, they're all dancing and having fun
- LOL at the fake Harcourt table tennis institute ad :P

Summer League Lax Record: 8-4

I agree the movie is consistently funny. Most of the hate comes from white people who apparently don't like that white people can be depicted as insensitive about race (like the ridiculous review that shows on the home page). Whatever.

Well said.

If it was the other way around, Asians/Blacks/Mexicans/Eskimos/Aliens/etc. would probably be just as pissed off if not more so. White people are just portrayed as evil, ignorant a-holes in this movie. The movie was great stupid fun otherwise, but the race vs. race thing was freaking idiotic, and was a detriment to the movie. And before anybody thinks that I'm just some stupid sensitive white guy, I'm Filipino.

I actually read that entire post and you think the movie deserves more than a 6.0 because of all that silliness? Really?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this movie as well but let's be a little more realistic.

The rating is too low. The movie is also a bit more socially-aware than its near slap-stick tone accounts for. Jimmy Tsai a pretty educated cat that went to Berkeley.

I loved the little one-liners- "We ain't buying none of your opium up in here."

Winter's Bone: Best film of 2010. Jennifer Lawrence is the next big thing.

Ha ha ha. Seriously, you are sort of right. But on the other hand a lot of films like this get rated a lot lower.
