Compare this to the remake

Who has seen both?

i haven't seen the hollywood version, but i was quite dissapointed in the original. as a thriller it could be sharper. the interaction between the doctor & the agents could've been better, dialogue could've been smarter. the agents came off as greenhorns & amateurish. in fact, the old rachel still came off as an amateur. granted, she was old & probably rusty, but still...it's like watching one of the desperate housewives playing detective in wisteria lane!
**SPOILER**
her access to the nursing home was also laughable. everything was through coincidence. someone left a house robe by accident. someone asked for herr doctor's room. the alleged surgeon just happened to have a grandkid who had to be chased so she could enter the room. etc etc.
i also don't appreciate the fact that the movie propagates the tired stereotype of women, e.g. her emotions got the best of her, incompetent when it comes to important jobs (falling asleep then the prisoner escaped), etc.

Wow, color me blind. I thought this was a phenomenal film, and miles better than a lot of the crap that has been coming from Europe lately.

I love the soundtrack and the acting and the film's slow pace (although admitedly that could be a turn off to a lot of people). Yes this is not Academy Award worthy but I thought very entertaining. I am curious to see what the "Hollywood" version will be like.

I thought the film as fantastic. Is it based on a true story? And what's up with the dialogue when it switches at points to French and German? Hard to follow.

reply

I thought it was well done overall but I do agree with your points above. When the older Rachel couldn't get into the nursing home I thought, "What kind of trained Mossad agent can't figure out how to get into a guarded building? And how could she have been taken by surprise in the bathroom at the end? Also thought it was funny when one of them mentioned the "years of training" they had had and I thought, "You could have fooled me."

I watched this on Time Warner cable by mistake thinking it was the new one because I had not realized the new one was a remake. I saw the title "The Debt" and figured it must be the one that is in theaters. Time Warner has a bunch of films available that are still in theaters. I actually thought it was fascinating and gripping despite the flaws above.

I have not seen this version but I look forward to it. Is is available on DVD?

reply

@soulthinker: I don't believe it's available on DVD, but if you have Sundance Channel (on demand), it's playing for free for the next few weeks. (I watched it on Time Warner Cable in Los Angeles. I hope you can get it where you are located.) Haven't seen the English language version.

I saw the 2011 version last week and this version yesterday. I thought both were great movies. The new version following the 2007 version pretty much with some exceptions.

astra44 - I found it on Comcast On Demand. On the first screen of the On Demand menu - click on Free Movies and you'll find it. It not found on the Sundance Channel On Demand menu. At least not on Comcast.

Still sorry your side lost brother?
Honestly I am very critical of Israel but the holocaust did happen,it was wrong and the fascists lost world war 11.
Next you will be telling us Obama is welsh.

I have seen both films and neither are great films, the remake is much better, the original cost me £5,which was about as much as the budget.
The remake reproduces many of the same scenes but with much better acting and production values.
For example the doctor and his nurse are much older in the remake.
Is the original set in East Berlin?they have made little effort to show this if it is.

reply

I disagree about the quality Ibo, the actors were great and the feel was utterly authentic.

- The actor playing the doctor in the original appeared to be at least ten years too young for the part.

- Almagor/Rachel had the audacity to write a false book about her own "bravery".
Mirren/Rachel was humble about her "heroism". She was embarrassed by the book.

- The US version's love triangle was more plausible/better developed.

- The US version didn't allude to the fact that the doctor had escaped until the movie was past the halfway mark, that was the best part for me. I enjoyed the surprise factor when the doctor was shown escaping.
