Why did this movie fail?

why do you think this film ultimately failed to connect with the general public, and it won't be getting a sequel? i think the general public, beyond every other criticism of the film, just saw it as a 3rd rate attempt to ride iron man's coattails. i remember critics pointing out how there seemed to be no point to the film, since iron man had already covered the same ground and done it far better.

It failed because it made a mockery of the Green Hornet. The Hornet wasn't made to be a comedy and the bathroom humor was pathetic. It didn't come close to what true Hornet fans wanted. I would love to see a reboot with someone with talent as the Hornet and writers that at least knows what the Green Hornet was all about.

I think it failed commercially simply because the public no longer considers newspapers a viable source of news. I hate saying that but breaking stories are not and cannot be released through them in this era of the internet and mobile devices. The entire bit of business of rushing the thumb drive to the newspaper offices makes no sense as it could've been uploaded by a smart phone, but then there wouldn't have been a huge car chase and all that gun play ;-p

In a nutshell, the premise of a newspaper being a basis of the story line is passe. Even Clark Kent has quit the Daily Planet which I believe proves my point. And I'd appreciate your not staring at the top of my head as I'm self conscious about my point.

As cool as the Imperial was (please do NOT call it a "Chrysler Imperial") I was disappointed to see what appeared to be stock taillights instead of the way kool originals that wrapped up onto the trunk. Dean Jeffries was/still is the man!

The Sad Failure of The Green Hornet

The Green Hornet was a disappointment for star and writer Seth Rogen back in 2011. It was a project long in development, jumping from different directors and stars. So why didn't the film work? That's what I wanted to talk about this week.

reply

This film was doomed the second Seth Rogen was signed to write and star.

Agree also that the newspaper angle was pretty anachronistic. I'm not sure why they didn't make the company evolve as a satellite news organization which would've made it more timely.

reply

No doubt, Rogen's inability to play this part murdered this movies chances of success.

Seth Rogen

reply

Just like nobody wanted to see Geena Davis play a pirate in the famous commercial flop Cutthroat Island back in the 90s, nobody wants to watch Seth Rogen be an action star!
The film is supposed to be a comic book adaptation. Yet, instead of being a "safe" action flick like Green Lantern and Thor which did all right, this film tried to be comedy. It just doesn't gel. It didn't get the right balance of comedy and action right.
And as the other poster said, newspaper being THE source of info is a bit passe.

But the biggest reason is def. Seth Rogen. Not that many people want to watch him play an action hero. It's like watching Moby (bless, I love the guy) playing a romantic lead opposite Melissa McCarthy.

reply

The biggest reason is because the general teen public doesn't know who Green Hornet is not do they give a crap. Fans might care but fans are the minority anyways... they could make a super-serious film 'true to the original' and it would still fail. The Green Hornet is too lame to be done seriously in modern times, unless they set the movie in the '50's.

Seth Rogen

reply

It's not the adaptation of a comic book. It's the adaptation of a radio show and the Rv show that was based on it.

reply

You're kidding, right? He had a 3 minute cameo in the film. James Franco is NOT the reason this turd of a movie failed.

Dean, did you service Oberon, King of the Fairies?

reply

casting Seth Rogen was the worst decision since casting Uma Thurman as Emma Peel.
Its only truly terrible casting that kills a movie before its even been shot.
There were other factors, and the movie is poor, but fatty as GH is the worst.

reply

Agreed... Seth Rogen. I don't care what he looks like, don't care if his character was inappropriately funny. I DO care that he was an absolute twit, his character (if you can call it that - it was really just Seth Rogen being Seth Rogen in a terribly unsuitable role) didn't have a SINGLE redeeming feature. Watching this movie gave me a tension headache and it was entirely due to Seth Rogen. Oddly enough, I usually think the guy's hilarious but this was simply horrid.
