An honest / impartial opinion would be nice

It would be great if the people responsible for the films would step away from writing pathetic reviews of their own work..

"The most original take of the "Stop Time" movie genre. With crisp cinematography and stella performances from a a young cast to look out for in the future. This film is a must see for all serious movie goers".

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..................

I find it offensive that some snotty nosed 20 something feels he/she are entitled to try to con me out of my money with a bullsh!t review and made up threads.

reply

This happens everywhere, fake reviews are so common I don't believe anything attached to a movie anymore from imdb... stick with external reviews instead.

reply

Actually, there are a few ways one can discern biased reviews and avoid being scammed.

1. If a movie has more than 300 votes, you're more likely to get an honest rating, as most independent filmmakers have less than 300 friends and family.

2. Click on the number of votes link next to the rating and you'll see the breakdown of how many people voted for each rating. If you see a lot of 10s combined with a lot of low votes, that's a sure sign of padding. The ratings on this film:

35 10 star votes
17 1 star votes

and very few in between makes this a poster child for review fraud. If the reviews are honest, you'll see spikes toward the middle, not the extremes.

3. Always go to the last comment page and read the worst reviews first.

4. It's not easy to do, but if you feel like fraud is being committed, try to get your hands on the movie and watch it. Once you know, for certain, that it's a ruse, scream it from the bloody hilltops. I've done this in the past and I really think my efforts made a difference. If enough people are aware of this issue, the community can go a long way in policing itself.

reply

That's all great advice, and I agree.

You should try posting on the Little Erin Merryweather boards if you think this is a shill page though. Watch the film *shudder* and give an honest review. I guarantee it will be deleted if you have the slightest negative thing to say. It's happened to a lot of us, and despite talking to IMDb staff they still just keep deleting anything that gets reported, no matter how spurious the reason.

This place has lost a lot of credibility to me in last few weeks. Shill reviews and scores aren't that hard to detect and should be deleted.

That said, I'm going to be watching Suspension with an open mind as soon as I can get a hold of a copy from lovefilm in the UK.

I know that any movie where time is manipulated is probably impossible, but in this film, stopping time was abused like I've never seen before. How that camcorder ever got the power to stop time is something I still can't figure out. The character that used the camcorder became a time-stopping junkie.

I often wondered how far ranging the time-stopping effect was felt. Throughout earth, the solar system, the galaxy, the universe? I don't think a simple camcorder could harness enough power to stop time even for a few feet. Even for science fiction, I think the plot had far too many holes and the time-stoppage rules seemed inconsistent. Basically the guy was a time-stopping junkie sicko. The lead female character tried to explain to the police that the camcorder could stop time. Naturally they wouldn't believe her. Yet if I were a policeman, I would have tried to see if it really could stop time.

It wasn't a very interesting movie at all because all the guy did was stop time constantly just to hang out with the girl and nothing exciting ever transpired. Both of the lead characters were not likable at all. This is one movie I think was a waste of time to watch.

This happen with all small budget movies. There are several reviews giving a movie 10/10 and telling people it is the greatest movie ever.

I think that is the key to knowing the film will suck.

They didnt even take the time to write proper reviews. It is quick stuff like "You will be blown a way by this great movie." They never mention much about the plot other than what can be read on the tagline.

I wonder if if i is people who worked on the movie or just some kid they pay to create publicity on the net.

Anyone not part of the movie that has seen this yet?

Dean

reply

Maybe it's because I expected it to suck, but I really liked it.
I gave it 8/10

reply

Can you provide some details about what you liked?

Forgive me for being cyncial but I have been through the little known movie releases of people with short great reviews that just dissapear.

reply

I agree. I voted it a 1 because of the bullsh*t reviews. Oscar material? LOLOOL

reply

Interesting idea/concept, very ordinary film.

It took a lot of effort not to stop the DVD and change films.

Better ways to spend an hour and half of your time, unfortunately this isn't one of them.

One of the better indie sci-fi's I've watched in the last couple of years would be Primer. I'd recommend viewing that over Suspension.

reply

well...i was clever enough and watch it only for 27 minutes...it is just GARBAGE..

reply

I liked the movie. It certainly wasn't the best movie in the world, but it wasn't bad at all. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting.

The soundtrack was excellent IMO, and the actors were very good. Well done overall. 7/10.

and Carlel has only one post to his name :P ...ie, a plant...

reply

Agreed, no Lawrence of Arabia here, but definitely enjoyable.

Well acted for the major parts, and definitely good for suspense!

I would say a seven or six myself.

reply

I have nothing to do with this film, i downloaded it off the internets because the premise sounded good.

heres my review.

Watched this last night. What can i say it has a great premise. A guy who's family is killed in an accident, recovers while trying to piece back together his sons video camera damaged in the accident he discovers that pressing pause on the camera freezes time, after discovering this he uses his time freezing power to help the wife/fiancee/girlfriend? of the other person who collided with him in the accident. thats where the good ends. the rest of the movie is terrible acting, bad direction and plot holes. at one point that was prolly supposed to be serious i burst out laughing. he freezes time and hes in this guy's house. some guy who was trying to get closer to the woman he was developing a sycophantic crush on. anyway he has the guy frozen in time and hes talking *beep* to the guy then he punches the guy a couple times in the kidneys, once in the chest and once in the jaw. then he smiles to himself satisfied and walks out the house to resume the normal flow of time. at this point a girlish scream is heard from inside the house and he pauses time again to go see what happened. lol the guy is all *beep* up frozen in time with blood leaking through his shirt where the guy punched him and blood frozen in time flying from his face. totally ridiculous and unexplained. oh man lemme wrap this up. this movie was pretty boring and the only reason i watched it all the way through is because i really wanted to see where they were going with this movie. plus i kinda like to have watched a whole movie before i talk about it, unlike some other people who shall remain nameless. or is that unnamed?

5/10 im being really generous.

Was an "OK" movie, but man did it move forward like a herd of turtles with a bad case of asthma...

You hit the nail right on the head with this review. I feel the same.

serious. i'm so sick of these astroturfers who've invaded IMDB's rating system.

i started noticing a while ago that certain indie productions were getting rave reviews and message board comments that were completely inconsistent with the actual quality of the film.

it's true, there are many indie films out there that are far superior to their big budget counterparts. and many indie filmmakers are far more talented than what's usually seen in mainstream cinema. but the filmmakerss that rely on these underhanded tactics generally aren't very talented.

artificially inflating your IMDB score and paying people to write dishonest reviews is incredibly immoral and insulting to audiences. and no doubt these filmmakers have no real talent or desire to make good films, and are driven entirely by greed.

this film definitely seems to fit the bill--rave reviews that are full of stock quotes and unqualified praise, and a high IMDB score that has plummeted as more people start giving honest reviews.

this problem really undermines the democratic nature of IMDB's rating system and the website's usefulness to film lovers. not only that, but the low quality indie films that are getting inflated scores discounts the merits of truly great and honest indie filmmakers out there.

IMDB really needs to come up with some measures so that people who game the system are identified and punished.

It is actually kinda sad to see filmmakers do this. It betrays a serious lack of confidence in their own product -- they are basically telling the world that they don't even like their own movie.

They think nobody will give them a good review, so they write these crazy, over-the-top diatribes that nobody with any sense will believe are really true.

I just wish they would STFU next time; make a good movie and people will probably like it.

There really is no need for this

reply

true. if they had confidence in their work, they'd realize that good films promote themselves--and this goes with any type of product.

for instance, The Man From Earth was a low-budget indie film that took off simply because the producers put the film on BitTorrent and let viral marketing take its course.

no need for astroturfing, planting fake reviews/message board posts/etc.

in the long run these stuffed votes eventually become outweighed by the honest votes of real audiences, and inevitably the IMDb score will reflect the true quality of the film (or at least the real public reception of it). however, i think if IMDb introduced a simple algorithm that watches for certain voting patterns they could actively discourage these pathetic attempts to game the system.

all you have to do is check for new indie productions with lots of high votes and an inordinate amount of glowing user comments in the first few weeks. then monitor the activity for the next 2-3 months. if the score suddenly plummets from a 9.0 to a 5.0 in those first few months, then in all likelihood the filmmakers tried to game the system. then IMDb can ban the filmmakers/reviewers from the site, or at least put a black mark next to their name so that, whatever productions they're associated with in the future, people will know to be wary of any glowing reviews or positive ratings that they receive.

IMDb has become such an industry presence that if this were implemented, the astroturfers that get caught would probably be blackballed by hollywood.

reply

Agreed. IMDb really have to start doing something about dishonest film-makers shilling their films. More than once it's cost me time and money, and it seems to be getting worse on here over time.

reply

False user reviews by company staff have been banned within the EU now. Although the team to fight it is small and will only react in major cases. IMDB and similar sites need to put a system in place to protect the user. Most companies have static IP's. They ought to regularly vet reviews against these IP's and then start banning them from reaching the site, and attach a banner to the movie page in question stating, "possible user review fraud has occurred with this movie"

But then, how much money does IMDB receive from the film makers and actors to get on the site? Doubt they'll bite the hand that feeds them.

In the case of this movie, the quality of video work evident in the trailers put me off watching it. Not at the professional level I can see myself parting with my money as recession hits the world. Sometimes you get that same feeling of revulsion parting with your money as when a heroin addicted tramp approaches you on the street for money.
