Good Story, Mediocre Execution

I really found the story and plot intruiging and interesting and I did like some of the interaction between the characters in the prison itself. The problem was that the flashbacks and the courtroom scenes didn't seem genuine. The courtroom scenes, while better than most Indian movies doing court scenes, didn't replicate an actual courtroom or actual court procedural rules well. Thus, the makings of a legal thriller were absent as the gamesmanship and strategy present in a common law legal system with its adversarial system were absent from this film. I had trouble identifying with the gravity of the accused's crime also. The movie could have done a better job of making us hate him, and then making us realize he was innocent to realize we'd been wrong along. This was the premise of the Tamil movie on the death penalty, Virumaandi, where the protagonist appears to be a societal slimebag worthy of the noose, until we realized that there were two sides to the story. This movie didn't really evoke much emotion because of its lack of believability. Ironically though it is a true story. While Indian movies nowadays have really improved in plot and content, historical biographies , true stories, and documentary type movies still need attention to detail to make them believeable and thus enjoyable.
