Vivian’s Decision. (Spoilers)

I agree with britwrit re: the flaccid ending. The film, for me, begins to die around the engagement party. I thought when Wilson left Vivian and Jacob on the roof to take a leak, the boyfriend was going to turn up and, thinking Jacob was Wilson, shoot him. There goes Min’s green card. When nothing happened..other than what we half suspected with Min trying it on, the film began to splutter.
But I still wondered - why does Vivian walk away? Is it because Wilson cried hearing his ex- girlfriend’s voice and she thinks he must still love her? And where will she go...back to the cartoon psycho boyfriend, or back to Texas to wait on tables? It made no sense to me. Maybe someone else knows - or maybe your story would have played out differently.

I saw this movie yesterday for the first time. It’s strange no one answered you yet. I’ll try to tell you my point of view on this beautiful and moving story.
First of all – thanks God – there were no guns and shooting or sudden blood bath or other cinematic clichés. The best quality of the “Midnight kiss” - it is about real people, like you and me,- living their little lives with sorrows as big to us as there are invisible to the others.
I wonder about your age, because, been at my late twenties I totally understand every single thing they do or don’t do. This movie has logic people have in LIFE and not in MOVIES (where they always TELL everything and where every question finds its answer) But life is way more complicated than that and that is why Wilson won’t tell his friend about the kiss. He cares great deal about his friend and doesn’t want to hurt him. (Although it is rather obvious that the girl is slutty and will end up to be an unfaithful wife)
The fact that Vivian is leaving Wilson at the end is also very clear.
Look at the bathroom scene where Vivian is looking at the mirror. She cries at first, then looks at herself , obviously making decision to KEEP THE BABY - GO BACK HOME TO HER MOM - GIVE UP HER ACTING -START RAISING HER CHILD.
That is why she has sex with Wilson. It’s her last night as a young girl in LA. She feels sorry – it is over for her, this part of her life - that is why she cries.
But then she calms down. The decision is made. That is why she softly refuses when Wilson asks to see her again. She is not going to be there anymore. She is not going back to her boyfriend either. The boyfriend understands it too. (That is why he burns her stuff. He gets rid of the last year’s sorrows).
And if you wonder - why Wilson and Vivian have to part ways if there was such chemistry between them?.. I would say - this was not the night for them to fall in love. It was the night where two lonely people in pain have managed to reach out for each other and give each other some warmth and light and hope. Hope for a change. That is why they are singing “Wind of change” in the end.
So, That’s how I see it))) Sorry for the English – not my first language))

Awesome response! I haven't seen the movie in awhile but from what I remember your interpretation is spot on!

I have to say that your interpretation is spot on, and allowed me to understand aspects of what is one of my favourite films, in a new light. Thanks. You are more articulate and insightful than a whole bunch of people on this site for whom English is their First Language!

THANK you!!! it’s very nice to here things like that from someone on imdb’s boards. (most of the time people just barking on each other here)))

I have to Ditto that.

A really good insite, into one of my favourite films.

You got it spot on and i wouldn't have thought that you were typing in your second language until you said. Very articulate and clear.

A good read......and a very enjoyable film.......has got me thinking a lot.
I might buy it and send it to my ex who dumped me a few months ago.....it might just make her think a bit :-(

I'd love to get a answer phone message from her saying "I miss you" :-)

As for "not your first language" well it never crossed my mind until you mentioned it.

Great insight and helpful post. I had some of the same insights while watching the film. The writers, actors, and director did a good job conveying this. Those with a certain level of cognitive ability, emotional perception and experience will get this from this film. Sometimes I sift through these comments in hope to find more information on the above topic, but it seems most of these comments are made to elicit a response to produce ego gratification. It is the crack of the Internet. There are millions of lonely people looking for validation using sarcasm and arrogance as a thinly veiled attempt at humor. This is a desperate cry for attention.
