Helen (Lesley Vickerage) brings the show to a dead halt

You've got this nice mystery going, nice Lynley and Havers interaction, and boom there appears Helen on the scene and you're like what did I do to deserve this. Honestly, I'd rather be watching ads. Why cant the makers realize that Helen is the most useless character ever to grace a detective series and just get rid of her. I cant even see what Lynley likes in her, they have like zero chemistry. Negative chemistry, in fact.

I don't like Helen much either. I didn't care for her in the books either. But watching this show, I keep thinking, "He can do better." I really can't figure out why she's sooo special. Not a big fan of Deborah in the books either. I don't normally hate the female characters in books and shows (I am a woman after all) but I have a really hard time liking them. I do like Barbara, although she can be so prickly. This series is one where I enjoy the mysteries in the books, but I have a hard time warming up to all of the characters. It's weird but I actually like TV Lynley better than book Lynley.

There's something here that doesn't make sense. Let's go and poke it with a stick.-The Doctor

Agreed. The character is just *unpleasant* -- so irritable so much of the time, and just not spectacular in any way even tho he is -- and as you said, there's zero chemistry between Helen and Lynley. The second Helen was almost as bad. So perplexing that the producers/casting person couldn't get Helen right, considering how well they did with Lynley, Havers, and virtually everyone guest actor in the series.

Btw, if you like Nathaniel Parker, you've got to see the 1998 production of "Vanity Fair" and the 2005 production of "Bleak House."

She is rather dull.

reply

She is boring. Adds nothing to the series.

reply

She is not only boring, she is ugly and unpleasent. We will never know why somebodyt cast her in the first place.

I agree. They really messed up this one putting in Helen. Very unlikable character and not a great contributor. I think they should have left her out of the series and put in more of Lynley's friend and wife (ex finance of Lynley's. They had good parts to play and would have added more depth then Helen.
