I claim this board in the name of that guy I am

I'm up to around episode 15 now and I like it, pretty funny show.

You know, I let you claim this board. I was so tempted to take the first post last week. I just didn't have anything witty to say. I'm glad you're enjoying the show, btw.

No "true" fans allowed, lol. This should be a fun board since this is a fun show.

Haha, I know. When you said no one was on this board last week I came over and looked and almost claimed it then, but I figured I'd at least watch a few episodes first. Then I forgot all about it until you asked me about the show a few minutes ago.

I doubt it will ever be a very popular board, though. Maybe if it gets licensed over here and ends up on Adult Swim or something there might be a surge in the population for a while. Then all the 'true' fans will arrive...

Yeah, I can hear the "true" fans complaining about the dub already, before it even exists.

This is the first comedy anime I've watched, btw. Everything else has been action or drama, I suppose, with occasional comedic elements. AdultSwim usually doesn't do comedy for their anime shows (at least they haven't in the past), if that's any indication. They market their animes as their "action" offerings and keep the comedy for their own productions. Maybe they'll reconsider, as this is a popular show in Japan, but I think they'll pick something like Death Note instead. Something with an already large fanbase here. (But maybe not Death Note per se, as Viz is doing that via downloads.) I wonder what other shows are the Next Big Thing.

They did try to air some weird comedies before, like Super Milk Chan and another show I can't remember the name of. Super Milk Chan was awful; I could only watch five minutes because it was so garish and stupid. I never watched the other show, and I don't know if it went over well either. Gintama would be better than either of those, IMO, but the other two may have turned AS off comedy for good. Or maybe they only go for weird kitschy comedies and not more normal ones. :S

I also wonder if the casual AdultSwim viewer would get all the Japanese and anime references without explanation, like on the subs. Another reason why it may not go on AdultSwim, but we'll see what happens.

Ah, that's true isn't it, they don't have any anime comedy shows that I know of. You're right about viewers not getting some things though, especially with Gintama. I think a lot Japanese humor in general is just a little too off beat for many casual American viewers.

I rarely watch the anime on Adult Swim actually, most of it I've seen already and I don't often re-watch any serious shows. Yet I can watch the same silly comedies (watching Futurama right now) day after day... Not really watching though, it's just sort of background noise since I spend most of my free time doing something or other on the computer anyway.

I think they would still want to get Death Note in their line-up though, seeing as how that seems to be more popular than pretty much anything at the moment. They could always look for something a little older too, there are tons of good action anime that would fit the bill.
