Islamophobia - does this film incite fear?

Am I the only one here who has the feeling that the main motivation for this film is to make Islam look scary and stoke the fires of fear of terrorism?

It seems like it is an attempt to make "terrorism"(TM) real. It is a fact that more terrotism is happening to Islamic people in the United States then the other way around. Anyway. Some good film-making, although the propaganda-mind programming affect seems to be at the root.

Any thoughts?

I will just add another thought.

An earlier post mentioned something about people whining about anti-islam or whatever. That is not the point, repeat that is NOT the point.

The point is this: if people have something to fear either consciously or subconsciously, then the criminals in charge of our countries can justify huge expenses on "homeland" security, the removal of all types of personal liberty, the even huger expenses in wars overseas - which are all about imperialistic power and control.

The religion stuff is not really an issue here, it is the stoking or incitement of fear in the minds of the masses (where else do people get the idea that Arabs/Islamic people are dangerously violent, or at least a subset of them?)

This is not "Freddy Kruger" fear - but a fear that is the foundation to justify the deeds of our elitist masters who rule our country, and our world.

I just caught this film on netflix and found it very complex and fulfilling. I saw no true "white hats" or "black hats" in the film just many shades of gray. Our government and military have committed many atrocities in the name of the "war on global terrorism" just as extremists on the other side have. I am a middle aged, white, Manhattan native who grew up watching the WTC being built and now living in the DC area.

reply

Yes and no.
Let me start by saying that I'm 100% American and neither Muslim or Arab, but I completely agree that the real terrorist is the US Government. We screw over the third world for resources... so I don't care what anyone says, 911 was provoked by politics, NOT religion. And not to mention Operation Cyclone, where we created the Taliban.
People need listen to some Immortal Technique and open their eyes.

On the movie. Now the Arab/Muslim stereotype is exploited in this film, HOWEVER, I believe this is one of the more progressive films concerning the issue because of Don Cheadale's character.

Keep in mind that the film's protagonist is a more realistic portrayal of a Muslim, even if he's surrounded by stereotyped characters. And I was happy to see a "good guy" Muslim lead in a film.

Also, consider lines from the girlfriend like "You know, not all Muslims are terrorists." To me, the film at least showed both sides, what you take from it is up to the viewer.

Oh and this isn't related to the movie, but since I went there already on the politics, I'M GLAD THEY ARE BUILDING THE MOSQUE IN NEW YORK! There's this thing that was written for the CONSTITUTION to be ratified called THE BILL OF RIGHTS. And the FIRST AMENDMENT protects FREEDOM OF RELIGION.

I have spoken my peace.

reply

"FIRST AMENDMENT protects FREEDOM OF RELIGION."

Islam is more of a political ideology trying to pass as a religion.

reply

Yeah because the Bible is full of rainbows and roses.

reply

Actually, the New Testament is all about love. Jesus is the central figure in Christianity and he's forgiving and peaceful. Mohammad is the central figure in Islam and the man Muslims are supposed to strive to emulate. He was a brutal warrior who personally decapitated hundreds of his own opponents. I'm an agnostic and generally dislike religion, but Islam in particular is diametrically opposed to western notions we all embrace like freedom and tolerance.

"Yeah because the Bible is full of rainbows and roses."

Sure. Next time some nuns run onto a school bus yelling "Christ is greatest!" wearing bomb vests, I'll agree with you that all religions are equally at fault in promoting violence, and I'll stop picking on misunderstood Islam.

The standard defense by Muslims and their apologists, to start pointing fingers in all directions from the defendant's box.

reply

Islamophobia was more incited by the rash of militant Islamist terror attacks in the last 30 years.

reply

Did you ever think for a single fleeting moment maybe it is caused by extreme islamofascism going on all around the world,be it subjugation, beheading, talibanization, beating, etc?

cheers!

reply

I am so tired of people like you. Why does this film make islam look scary? The extremists make it scary!! They are the one too blame for making their own religion look like that for people who are not believing in Islam.

reply

So if A Christian does bad things he's just a villain if A Muslim does bad things he's a muslim villain. Last time i have read Quran and Bible there were no such things as bomb the building, kill everyone and you have the ticket to paradise. No, they are just sick people who happens to be ARAB! I was raised in a muslim country then converted to christianity and right now i don't believe in any of this. But i know these religious book didn't offer violence to people instead they were discouraged them. So how's that?

reply

Unequivocally no, since the main character is a Muslim, and a good guy, and his being a Muslim is central to his being a good guy.

There's a plan in everything, kid. And I love it when a plan comes together!
