Between 3 Idiots and this I may never watch another Indian movie again.

These movies are so stupidly overrated it is beyond comprehension. Average score of 8.6 is just ludicrous it really is. The movies were too long, weren't very funny and had almost zero story and every 5 minutes the actors randomly break out into song and dance. I really will find it hard to watch another Indian movie after having to deal with these 2 movies.

I wanted to like this movie, but I have to agree.

This is a 22-minute sitcom-ish "very special episode" about dyslexia stretched out to 165 minutes.

Taare Zameen Par, I agree with you on. However, the film is an important reaction to the Indian cultural milieu so its ratings are more a reflection of the film as an agent for social change rather than film as entertainment, and considering that there are several Western films that are on the top 250 for similar reasons rather than because they are well made, I don't see a problem with this film being on there as well. The same holds true for 3 Idiots as well but with the additional qualifier that humor is extremely subjective and differs substantially with culture. It is part of the reason why comedies tend to do terribly the world over despite being hits in the US (see Anchorman, Adam Sandler, the 1st Hangover et al). I find these American comedies egregious and barring the satire in Anchorman, entirely devoid of substance. This could, however, also stem from my lack of familiarity with American humor. 3 Idiots on the other hand, appeals to the pathos of Indian (and other Asian) students who've been shaped by the intense competition of their educational systems. A lot of the humor is specific to them so I do not expect outsiders to understand the hullabaloo surrounding it. With that said, if one were to measure the quality of a film as a function of its social impact, you would be a fool to deny that its rating is well deserved. Plus, unlike Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots is exceedingly well made (bar that stupid vacuum cleaner)

Some would say that a truly good film would be able to captivate people from many different cultures. I completely disagree that such a film could be considered perfect regardless of social impact the fact nearly 43,000 people said it was is truly stupid and westerns were you thinking of because there really isn't many on the top 250.

Last I checked Star Wars wasn't a western unless you were are on about movies from Western Countries. Either way your view on Star Wars is rather silly. Star Wars is probably one of the most influential movies ever made. In regard to it not being well made I find that a rather silly assertion to make especially if you look as to how the movie cleaned up in all technical categories at the Oscars. Sure there are some movies that aren't well made but are loved for their sentimentality, but Star Wars isn't one of them.

Also, before you say I'm not a Star Wars nerd

Can you tell me how can The Avengers (2012)be on 250 IMDB movies with such unrealistic characters and fake movie plot??

reply

Of course the characters are unrealistic in the avengers, they have superpowers....
And I honestly have no idea what you mean by "fake plot"

I know, they are blindly being given 10 ratings by Indians. Believe me, neither movie represents the best from India, they are more from popular variety. You need to watch Apu Trilogy, Swades, Rang de basanti, Udaan, Khosla ka ghosla. There are songs in these movies too, but they are more integral part of storytelling.

And you believe a movie like Apocalypse Now deserves to be in the top 50? I dozed off twice during the movie and I absolutely love war themed movies. Saving Private Ryan was a classic.

reply

You're right. Piece of *beep* movies.
