Why was the guard shot?

Did I miss something or is it up to interpretation? Can someone help please? thank you!

Also, what was he looking for in the opening?

He was looking for a car bomb, that's why we see the key in the ignition and the wife watching worriedly in the window. It's also partly foreshadowing his death, although leading us the wrong way.
The killing of the guard happens directly after the strip searches and after that, when Bobby is talking to the priest, in the 17 min shot, the priest asks what happened to his eye, Bobby says 'you should see the other guy', implying the guard has been killed as retribution for the violent behaviour towards the inmates, in particular Bobby.

Great thank you very much!

IRA, I suppose.

Actors are like cows. You have to lead them through a fence.

A message at the end stated that quite a few guards were killed. I don't remember the exact number but it was a lot - maybe 21.

IMO he was a particularly nasty screw and for that, he was singled out for execution. Can I just add the killing of the screw is a fine example of what these IRA scum were like, killing someone in front of their ma in an old folks home when the IRA could have chosen some other way to carry it out.
