Is it true he started filming with a German accent and it sounded so terrible that they dropped the idea? I remember hearing that somewhere.

No, "nobody" would watch movie in German with subtitles, that's why they just shown transition from German to English to show us we are looking at people who are supposed to spak in German. I like a lot they didn't even tried stupid German accents in English.

It is known that they portrayed the movie in German and then slowly transitioned to English to tell us that even though the movie is in the english language, these characters spoke german.

Who knows for sure, does anyone mention it on the Blu-ray. I do remember Bryan Singer at the time saying he made the choice early on to have everyone just speak in their natural accent.

I like Cruise as an actor, but accents is definitely not his strengths by a long shot.
