What were they going to do once Hitler died?

What was the exact plan to be put forth after the confirmation of Hitler's death?

reply

The movie suggests that the Berlin garrison needed to be put on alert much faster, so as to arrest any of Hitler's successors. Valkyrie was somewhat sufficient enough to operate through chain of command assuming each commander recognized orders from a superior. The German solider follwed the supreme leader not a constitution. What brought Hitler to power could have brought him down, as long as there was no conflicting orders. Presumably, the first priority would have been to withdrawal to defensive positions on the Eastern Front immediately, and authorize Rommel or Rundstedt to grant a cease fire in France.

reply

The Allies would not have gone along with a cease-fire in France. It would have had to have been an unconditional surrender, and the plotters were not about to go for that.

reply

That's a good point.

In late June, early July, the Allies were, still, stuck in the bocage. Another set of orders for Rundstedt could've directed more tanks and/ or strategic retreats that could've extended either front for another two years.
Remember, Germany, still, had armament production.
Hitler refused retreats. He had no strategy and he was delusional. So were some of his marshals, though.

reply

They had everything planned before hand.

Planned government
The conspirators were earlier designated positions in secret to form a government that would take office after the assassination of Hitler were it to prove successful. Because of the plot's failure, such a government never rose to power and most of its members were executed. The following were slated for these roles as of July 1944:[66]

Generaloberst Ludwig Beck (Army) – President
Carl Friedrich Goerdeler (DNVP) – Chancellor
Wilhelm Leuschner (SPD) – Vice-Chancellor
Paul Löbe (SPD) – President of the Reichstag
Julius Leber (SPD) or Eugen Bolz (Centre Party) – Minister of the Interior
Friedrich Werner von der Schulenburg or Ulrich von Hassell (DNVP) – Foreign Minister
Ewald Loeser (DNVP) – Minister of Finance
Friedrich Olbricht (Army) – Minister of War (With Von Stauffenberg as a possible State Secretary)
Generalfeldmarschall Erwin von Witzleben (Army) – Minister of Defence and Commander-in-Chief of the Wehrmacht
Hans Oster (Army) – President of the Reichskriegsgericht (military supreme court)
Hans Koch (Confessing Church) – President of the Reichsgericht (supreme court)
Bernhard Letterhaus (Catholic trade unionist) – Reconstruction Minister (Minister without portfolio if not appointed)
Karl Blessing – Minister of Economics or President of the Reichsbank
Paul Lejeune-Jung (DNVP) – Minister of Economics
Andreas Hermes (Centre Party) – Minister of Agriculture
Josef Wirmer (Centre Party) – Minister of Justice
Henning von Tresckow (Army) – Chief of Police
