It looked like Brandt sensed that Stauffenberg ....

was up to something at the one particular conference when a/the bomb exploded. Which is curious since early in the movie Brandt also seems to think Tresckow was up to something.

At any rate, Brandt must have been in the stratosphere after that blast, considering how close he was.

Yes. The movie actually got this detail right. The bag fell over, and Brandt righted it up, but in doing so, he moved it to his side of the table's leg, saving Hitler's life, but causing his own death. Brandt definitely got the worst of the blast.

It's maybe possible Brandt suspected something (and the movie definitely suggests that, maybe just for added suspense - I haven't heard anything about Brandt actually suspecting anything in what I've read or the docus I've watched), but I doubt he knew there was a bomb in that bag. I mean, if you knew there was a bomb in a bag, would you move it as close to yourself as possible?

That's what bothered me about the whole thing. If Brandt's dirty look of suspicion at Stauff. means he has some idea of what Stauff. is up to, why stay in that room? Why not wonder what that bag really was. Brandt knew, from his earlier dealing with Tresckow, that kind of thing was going on. With Stauffenberg? Maybe, maybe not.

Actually, I just thought as of this writing, that Brandt had an earlier run-in with Stauff. at the Obersalzburg about some briefing that Brandt wanted to review, claiming he was Hitler's eyes. And Fromm remonstrated Brandt about it, sorta to mind his own business. Maybe that dirty look Brandt gave Stauff. later at Rastenburg, was a look of professional rivalry. You know, Brandt was not thinking Stauff. was up to the same thing Tresckow was, but rather Brandt was thinking "why you no good so-and-so, going over my head (back at Obslzburg). I'll get you one day". That kind of thing.

That makes sense of the whole thing.

Brandt's leg was blown off by the blast; he died the following day.

In the film it looked like he was suspicious of Stauffenburg, or at least found it odd that the man was ducking out of a briefing with the Fuhrer to take a personal call. He seemed to be the type who was suspicious of everyone; his job, after all, involved hunting conspirators and traitors. But he clearly didn't have any idea what was going on, and his suspicions apparently didn't extend to the briefcase.

It's possible that Brandt thought Stauffenburg might be up to no good, but was wary of acting on it; after all, he followed up on his hunch about Treskow by suggesting they open the bottle of Cointreau in his office, and it backfired on him when Treskow called his bluff. Possibly he was thinking "That Stauffenurg's acting a bit strangely, I'd best keep an eye on him and see what I can fi-"KABOOOOOOOOOOM!

Yeah. In my last post I had mentioned the run in Stauffenburg had with Brandt where Stauff. refused to let Brandt look at the presentation, saying he (Brandt) was the Fuehrer's eyes and then was dressed down by Fromm. I thought maybe that dirty look Brandt gave Stauff. in the Rastenberg briefing room was one of professional dislike instead of suspicion of illegal acts.

But then again, from earlier in the movie, Brandt knew there was something afoot with Tresckow's bomb in the liquor box. Brandt must have realized that serving directly to the Fuehrer put him in immense danger at all times, especially in aircraft and in sedentary situations. Although he might not know that Stauff. took Tresckow's place.

Oh well, just a trifle really. Not a bad movie at all.
