How is this spun-off from Spy Kids?

According to IMDb, Machete is spun-off from Spy Kids AND Grindhouse. I know how it's spun-off from Grindhouse, but I don't know how it's spun-off from Spy Kids.

Machete's last name is Cortez. He's playing the same character as he did in Spy Kids.

I would assume it takes place early in his career.

Also Daryl Sabara was in spy kids (he was Julio, the redhead)
