Can someone please explain it to me? I'm sorry I'm so stupid. Explain why they were suddenly thrust into and alternate dimension, explain why the monsters want the girl, explain the confrontation between the girl and the uber-demon at the end...basically explain everything! This movie didn't offer alot in the way of explanations.

Ok well the way i looked at it, and this is just my opinion, was this... The characters are ALL dead from the beginning of the film, presumably when the machine explodes. The little girl and the old man seem to be aware of this but none of the others do.
Now the little girl and the old man (Sarah and Tobias i think!) appear to have a link or connection. This is alluded to a few times in the film. When he whispers to her at the start and end of the film. When she tells him "he will sleep" and when they both cover their ears BEFORE the ghost starts shrieking.
I think, these 2 are stuck in a time loop like Groundhog Day/Silent Hill, just doomed to repeat the process over and over again (and the monsters are controlling the girls psyche or what have you meaning she's stuck there and has to keep repeating it). This could be why the monsters never go near her in the film. I don't think they DO want her, but the characters do, classic mis-direction. Now Sarah and Tobias try things over the course of the movie (which dont become apparent till the end) to try to change the outcome of this loop, or, better still, to end it. For example, when Tobias tries to kill himself, and often refers to that throughout the movie. Also at the end when sarah picks the BLUE crayon, just as the process begins again. They are hoping that this will break the cycle if they change subtle things.
The uber-demon at the end was like the mastermind behind the "alternate universe thing" he was basically trapping the girl there so she would have to repeat the process over and over again.
As for the alt universe, I dunno is you've seen/wanna see silent hill. If you havent and you want to, stop reading now and skip to the next paragraph!!! In silent hill there is a scene where rhada mitchell is in the abandoned school in silent hill, there are things and people there. Sean Bean comes across the school at almost the exact same time in the real world and it is completely deserted and looks totally different. This is because Rhada mitchells character and her daughter die at the start of the film when the motorbike crashes and they are in a sort of hell/pergatory.
Dark Rooms is like this, remember that scene where the dad and the nurse are stood outside the same room but not together? It's kind of like that. Because this is a loop and much dependant on the girls psyche realities can blur, the dimensions slip etc.
These are just my personal opinions. I dunno if you agree. Hope this helped.
