A ten? A TEN?!

Before I went to see this film, I looked at imdb to see what my fellow film fans had said about it. 54% of people had given it a ten. 54%! I can only assume that these people had never seen another film ever.

I gave it a 1 - for Camber Sands and the sex scene, which would have made it a two if not precluded by the immortal line 'You make me think I'm missing out on the simple things in life, like fish fingers.'

Before tonight, Daylight was the worst film I ever saw.

The film struck such a wrong note with me that its closure I wasn't sure whether I should laugh; not a good thing when you think about what the film was covering. It was a disappointment considering how much I was looking forward to it: the background to the film is quite intriguing. The problem is, there is more that can go wrong when covering such controversial and sensitive material. The end result was pretentious and unrealistic, the film collapsing under the weight it had created. Viewers in the United Kingdom will also note how miscast the stars are. Michelle Williams, despite a strong performance, delivers an accent as though she were from Surrey, not an 'East End Slapper' as she was supposed to be. The star I give to the film is for being bold and having the ambition required to make this film. The result however, is not.

What I wish is that the public was allowed to even see the film to make up their own minds as to whether it was good or not.

It was pulled after around 1 week in the UK and I don't see it being released in the US.

It will be available in March of 2009 for the UK.
I can only hope it will come out on DVD for the US.

I am a Ewan McGregor fan, and I would like to see this film, good or bad, and have the chance to make up my own mind...

reply

Thanks Scot3121, I was wondering when this was gonna come out in the UK.

Haha! Fun-ny.

I 100% agree.

I have no idea what kind of brain dead people have voted 10 for it.

I can only imagine, the makers of the movie, have all signed up and voted 10, to try and keep the rating as high as possible for as long as possible.

Frankly, that is cheating.

Give it 3 weeks, it'll be down to 5.1.

Whoever voted 10 is so stupid.

reply

Not everyone is going to have the same opinion, and just becasue some didn't like it doesn't mean others that did,
are stupid. I would never say that to anyone.

I happen to like a lot of films that others don't. Sometimes the films that are trashed the most, turn out to be really quite good.

I will get to see it in May on DVD. Then I will know for sure how it is...

reply

Look. Certainly the filmmakers can get on here with umteen different accounts and vote 10/10.

It's easy.

reply

Im sure these people that give these rubbish movies 10 are genuine because there has got to be a reason why they keep making these long boring movies that could just be made into a ghost whisperer tv episode. Directors seem to think stretching a boring movie written by a writer on mind altering drugs out for longer then 2 hours makes it an oscar chance......its crazy!

reply

I found this movie to be VERY S-L-O-W......

for the qaulity of actors in it i was surprised & disapointed....
but thats just MY opinion.

reply

all this morons who criticize the movie-made a great job and ad. for the movie/
I read all the rubbish but why the movie is so bad-no one really write what in the movie made him to puke-and I like this situation-when somebody say bad-this is sign to me that this movie is the best/
so thank you people you all make my day!

reply

Good solid acting and directing all 'round, IN MY OPINION. That's what movies are -- one's opinion. You don't get to decide what other people like to watch and react to.

My god, you should see the controversy for a film like The English Patient. It's an Oscar winning film and yet most comments are very derogatory.

reply

all IMDB scores are flawed, because they are easily open to corruption from the film-makers so do not use the score as an indicator to a movies quality, biased reviewing has gotten so bad I now only trust reviews from friends.

reply

Scores or not, the film was boring, boring, boring. I gave it a three. And don't let me start on the plot. And the cherry on this *beep* was the "letter to Osama", ffs.

reply

I totally forgot about that angelos. I gave this movie a 6 but now I'm thinking I should have gone with my original 5. What would posses someone to make a movie involving a letter to Osama is beyond me. Especially since the movie almost expects the audinece to believe Osama's sitting in a cave somehwere watching this movie thinking "Oh my god I've hurt a British mother, I must stop my evil ways".

That was by far the worst aspect of the film. And if this is what psychologist use to help people grieving in real life, they need to have their liscenes taken away. I understand writing is supposed to help you grieve but this "process" seems idiotic. It might help if the murderer was human, but clearly that isn't the case. I'm sure heartfelt teary letters only feed the monster.

If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.

I admit that this movie is slow to get off the ground and even slower to get it's message across; ergo, i would not rate it a 10, more a 6 or 7, although the target of the attack portrayed deserves a rating of at least 8 (joke). However, points have been made that need to be answered:

Before I went to see this film, I looked at imdb to see what my fellow film fans had said about it. 54% of people had given it a ten. 54%! I can only assume that these people had never seen another film ever.

Does that mean that 54% of the people who saw this film are wrong, never seen another film or just that the film is to theirs, but not to your taste? The latter, methinks.

Michelle Williams, despite a strong performance, delivers an accent as though she were from Surrey, not an 'East End Slapper' as she was supposed to be.

Agreed... to the first part - it WAS a strong performance! As to the second; I was born, raised (and live) in North London, and even I had to check whether or not she was born and raised here! Her accent, as portrayed, is pure North/East London/Essex.

I 100% agree.

I have no idea what kind of brain dead people have voted 10 for it.

I can only imagine, the makers of the movie, have all signed up and voted 10, to try and keep the rating as high as possible for as long as possible.

Frankly, that is cheating.

The people who voted this movie a 10 were stating their OPINIONS! You have no right WHATSOEVER to call them stupid!

Not everyone is going to have the same opinion, and just becasue some didn't like it doesn't mean others that did,
are stupid. I would never say that to anyone.

I happen to like a lot of films that others don't. Sometimes the films that are trashed the most, turn out to be really quite good.

An intelligent post. 10/10. Enough said!

Good solid acting and directing all 'round, IN MY OPINION. That's what movies are -- one's opinion. You don't get to decide what other people like to watch and react to.

Another 10/10... Wow, let's not get carried away people!

Scores or not, the film was boring, boring, boring. I gave it a three. And don't let me start on the plot. And the cherry on this *beep* was the "letter to Osama", ffs.

For my reply to this drivel, see below:

I totally forgot about that angelos. I gave this movie a 6 but now I'm thinking I should have gone with my original 5. What would posses someone to make a movie involving a letter to Osama is beyond me. Especially since the movie almost expects the audinece to believe Osama's sitting in a cave somehwere watching this movie thinking "Oh my god I've hurt a British mother, I must stop my evil ways".

Oh dear! Ummm... Mirabelle? Nobody expected osama (yes, small "o" - his name doesn't deserve to be dignified with a capital) to sit and watch this movie... it's not FOR him. It's for those who lost loved ones in and/or survived the 9/11, 7/7 and other terror attacks! It's a show of solidarity. The entire movie says "we feel your pain and your sorrow, even if we can't properly comprehend it. But we're doing the best we can by portraying this young mother whose world has been turned upside-down and whose family has been murdered!". That, of course, is my interpretation of the film; the makers may have intended something else entirely.

And if this is what psychologist use to help people grieving in real life, they need to have their liscenes taken away. I understand writing is supposed to help you grieve but this "process" seems idiotic.

Oh dear x 2! This just shows how much some people know about counselling techniques... in other words, nothing at all! Have you never heard of a Victim Impact Statement being read in court? The fact is, that having a victim/survivor write a VIS is a PROVEN therapeutic technique... it not only aids the victim(s) and/or survivor(s) in coping with their pain and/or grief, but also their guilt (in the case of survivors - at being a survivor). It beats the hell out of ripping the guts out of the b'stard (which, sad to say, would be MY reaction, if said b'stard happened to be anywhere in the vicinity).

It might help if the murderer was human, but clearly that isn't the case.

Let's face it, the murderer IS human, as is bin laden (the purported instigator of the attack portrayed in this movie). What did you think? Bin laden is a silicon-based alien from planet X?

I'm sure heartfelt teary letters only feed the monster.

VISs are intended only as a means of expressing one's grief and should only be read in court, as a closing argument by the victim or the victim's closest family (who are also considered victims under international law). They are not intended to be read by the perpetrator of the crime!

If you absolutely MUST rubbish a film, at least post cogent arguments!

Yes, I HAVE swallowed a dictionary. I served it with a green salad and washed it down with a superb Chianti... it was DELICIOUS!

Come on man, this is a forum - Surely it's supposed to be like a post film discussion you'd have with your mates... I was joking when I said 'I can only assume that these people had never seen another film ever'... I wanted to see what other people thought.

Obviously people have different opinions, obviously we don't all like the same thing or have deeply intelligent debriefs for every film we see but come on... Why so serious?

I hated Incendiary. I loved Melody. Whatever.

reply

You almost ALWAYS have to ignore the 1/10 and 1/10 votes. Movies rarely are worthy of a 1/10 or a 10/10.

reply

It is a joke for sure. Next time you read a ridiculously glowing review, click on the username to see how many reviews they've written! More than 75-85% of the time they have written JUST ONE! If you see that, please click that NO that they didn't help you because they really haven't. The same goes for overly negative reviews too. A lot of these so-called bias reviews aren't even real. They go to a website, get an email address write that ONE REVIEW never to be heard from again. Much of the time they have some financial reason to do so. There should be a minimum of 10 reviews before they end up as the 1st review you see on the title page. It sure would be nice.
