Michelle Williams distracting

why do they have to get an american actress to play a british role? i keep waiting for her to screw up and start talking americanese. btw, is her english accent credible? why did ewan mcgregor have to explain with 20 quid means (20 pounds) to her? isn't she supposed to be a local?

i thought her accent was not bad - quite authentic for north london.

reply

so not east end like the character in the book then?!

I must admit, I like the actress very much, so I'm cautiously intrigued to see what she made of it.

reply

i (being british) thought her accent was fine. it's a quite specific accent, not the generic british one and i think she pulled it off well. chavs may disagree. ;)

ewan said "20 english pounds" just because that's something british people say. it's like a humourous way to emphasise how much money it is when it's not actually alot of money. try saying "FIVE (!) of your merican cents" like it's alot of money and you should get the joke.

The same reason why Brits are frequently cast as Americans - because she was right for the role.

- You're wrong. Sorry to ruin the ending for you.

I thought she did an excellent job. And if you're asking the question why an actor from the US had to play a Brit, they you've got to ask yourself the same question about the following Brits playing Americans:

Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen (Twilight)
Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House (House MD)
Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass (Gossip Girl)
Damian Lewis as Charlie Crews (Life)
Orlando Bloom as Drew Baylor (Elizabethtown)
Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman (The Dark Knight)
Kate Winslet as Clementine Kruczynski (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)
James McAvoy as Wesley Allan Gibson (Wanted)
Sophia Myles as Beth Turner (Moonlight)
Anna Friel as Charlotte 'Chuck' Charles (Pushing Daisies)
Matthew Rhys as Kevin Walker (Brothers and Sisters)
Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Vivian Johnson (Without A Trace)
Jamie Bamber as Captain Lee 'Apollo' Adama (Battlestar Galactica)
Lena Headey as Sara Connor (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles)
Michelle Ryan as Jaime Sommers (Bionic Woman)
Louise Lombard as Det. Sofia Curtis (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation)
Claire Forlani as Susan Parrish (Meet Joe Black)
Dominic West as Det. James 'Jimmy' McNulty (The Wire)
Minnie Driver as Dahlia Malloy (The Riches)

Enough said....

maybe because she is prettier , there's not many pretty british blonde actresses.

reply

That's gotta be it.

reply

You clearly are not a very sophisticated movie goer to even ask that question.

Her accent is awful, it's like she researched the role by watching Oliver Twist.

As someone born and raised in the East End of London, in a part of it that happened to have actually a spectrum of accents from the deepest Cockney to some quite posh people, I can say that I was waiting for Michelle to screw up with the accent.

But I found that she didn't. It was good. There was only one moment and one line when it slipped, but not into American -- she slipped from Cockney to a little bit more refined, just for a few words. Other than that, she did surprisingly well. There were even body language things and facial expressions that -- silly as this sounds -- can be seen a lot in London women of this type. That amazed me, because having lived in America, you just don't see the same body language in Americans.

As a Londoner myself, currently surrounded by women just like this character, I think Michelle did an astonishingly good job.
