I missed the first ten minutes or so...

Can anybody fill me in? I am especially interested in finding out why the parents of the children were not there.

There weren't much of an explanation really, the mother had gone to the shop and never returned. I didn't understand the deal about the father, but I think that he was dead and that they were living with their mother the whole time. Also, the first minutes just introduces the daily life of the mother and the son (main character) until hear about the meteor and go to the children's house. Oh, there's also a guy who shoots himself and his family (friend of the mother) - I don't understand exactly why, but I think it may have something to do with the meteor...? Hope this helps!

BIG SPOILERS!!
++++++++++++++

The mother found the parents hanging in trees near the home. It appeared she awoke from a dream, but even so, I think that means it actually happened--the killer found the parents and killed them and then went after the kids. At least that's the conclusion me and my friends came to.

Yes, the distraught man presumably killed is kids and himself so they wouldn't have to die in the aftermath of the meteor--quick vs. drawn out death.

Well you will probably never read this, but I have to reply.

What you saw was the grandmother character having a heart attack when viewing the tree her youngest son was almost hung from. She was flashing back to the terrible incident when Soma (think that's his name) murdered several children. Ale's brother I presume saved him, but he may have survived when a branch broke, thus his fear of heights.

The parents of the children we're repeatedly mentioned as both being away and a family friend was looking after them, this friend had gone into town earlier and never returned, presumably she had returned to her family.
