Mediocre... SPOILERS

I expected something philosophical, or at least scenes of chaos and panic, but this turned out to be yet another boring slasher made by the book, but put in apocalyptic setting, beautifully shot and well acted.

*******************************************SPOILERS*******************************************
Hey, if I knew that the end of the world is coming in a few hours, psychotic killer is probably nearing to seek a revenge, found my mother killed in the woods and after that a creepy guy comes at my house would I just let him siting on a folding chair by my door? *beep*
*******************************************SPOILERS*******************************************

If you really want something good with the same theme better watch Tarkovsky's Offret and Last Night. Even Miracle Mile is better than this one, at least is fun.

5/10

i guess we all gotta skip this **** comment too.

ps: i if want somethin' philosophical, get a life man. There's plenty out there.

reply

Hey, you shouldn't be angry at me for not liking the movie. I have the right to give my opinion and you have the right to skip it or oppose it, which you have not done.

Better ask yourself: "What is wrong with me? Why I like boring movies pretending to be original by just mixing two genres in a stupid way and folding it in a nice but overused cinematography?"

Get a life. Then you will not waste it engaging random people for not being happy loosing 90 minutes of their life watching a mediocre movie.

I bet that even people who like this movie after an year will not be able even remembering its name.

Sorry. This is not the next big indie/obscure movie.

twangzombie, you're a moron. that alone should say enough, but let me elaborate so that no one can dismiss this as merely being an opinion.

your understanding of the movie fails on basically all levels. it is NOT a slasher. a slasher movie is a sub-category of the horror-genre. this is no horror movie, but a thriller with a science-fiction background.

***Spoiler ahead***
Ale was not knowlingly letting the killer sit on the doorstep like you claim! he bought his excuse of being a friend of his brother. he doubted him and to back it up, he drove into town! the fact that he didn't shoot the killer shows his personality: rough on the outside, yet cautious and considering on the inside! a reaction of just killing a stranger on your doorstep on impending doom is nothing short of forseeable, cliche-like and hence outright boring! this is also what you find in any horror movie, which this movie - as i already explained - was not...

movie: 2
twatzombie: 0

you babble about how this was made by the book, but how many movies can you name that connect a similarl storyline with interesting characters and a gripping ending? this movie is highly unique and nothing less but refreshing!

the fact that your perception is so *beep* up that you can't even categorize a movie correctly should speak for itself! the philosophy that you expected was there, but apparently you wouldn't even be able to recognize it if an actor in a tunika playing plato would read it out loud for you!

reply

I will skip your notes on the genre categorization. It is selfcommenting. Try thinking outside the box, not in categories.

Throwing-in illogical scenes just to avoid cliches? And besides, this movie is full with cliches anyway.

I already recommended some movies with similar themes and there are probably more, which i can't recall now.

Go watch some GOOD movies, that do not require large amounts of coffee to endure them and do not insult viewer's intelligence, and then come back here with your newly created brain cells and apologize. Go!

Dont feed the troll ..i mean the zombie

reply

Jesus, what a self opinionated blinkered arse you are. If anything, we should skip your narrow minded comments as sickootz said. You have seriously missed the mark with your 'opinion' of the film, and seem to have viewed it in some kind of half conscious stupor!

reply

In this universe that movie has a big neon sign saying "mediocre". Sorry, people. Face it.

It has some good ideas, lined with craft, but nothing to remember. I even can't recall the plot.

I was not in stupor, but asleep.

If you have different opinions - fine! But don't hate me, because of mine! I'm the victim here!

I have to agree with Zombie. This movie was complete crap and anyone who thought it was good is probably not of the highest intelligence.

Edit: Actually not total crap because I suppose it was shot well and decently acted, but the story was simply mundane and boring. This is the type of movie who somebody of mediocre intelligence who mistakenly thinks they are smart would enjoy because it's so "edgy", but in reality it's all style and no substance.

reply

Have to agree... regardless of the merits of individual facets of the film, altogether it just was one of those failed attempts at fusing genres... Let's make a pre-apocalypse movie about ... a serial killer who wants to get his last kicks right before everyone dies anyway.

Ever watched a film and wondered what the point was? This is one of those.

reply

My girlfriend and I commented several times while watching this movie on how we liked the way the film was shot, and the performances were good.. but we didn't understand the motivation behind what Ale or particularly Soro was doing.

**spoilers**

If some dude gets out of jail 2-3 days before the world is going to end.. is he really going to spend the last of his time trying to hunt down and kill the guy that got him put away? Who cares? Everyone is dead in a few days anyway.. go enjoy yourself. Are we supposed to believe this is the only enjoyment he has left, to get these people?

And Ale would have no reason not to shoot the strange man he has a bad feeling about. If it turns out that the guy really was a friend of his brother's, then so what? Everyone is dead in a couple days anyway. Why spend the last day of your life being all wary and hiding in the house from the stranger? Shoot him and enjoy the rest of your short life. What's going to happen, you'll get arrested? Worried about going to hell? Meh.. "Hey God, I pointed a shotgun at the dude, and he smiled. He's obviously the bad guy. If he was my brother's friend, he'd have *beep* himself."

It's too bad.. the film had a lot of promise, but it was pretty ridiculous in it's execution.

I'm glad that there are guys who are not fooled and see what exactly is this movie.

I changed the name of the thread.

I wanted just to inform you that Uwe Boll made a movie called Final Storm which very much resembles Before The Fall. It is no less boring, but I thought that someone may be interested.

I enjoyed this film, and did not find it mediocre, but I can see where OP is coming from. It was almost entirely just 1 viewpoint (a good amount of it from the eyes of the grandmother). That characters attitude and actions unusual for someone faced with such and inevitable fate; but we all act differently in real life, so I can't fault that. Although I wanted to see a little more outside of the main character, it worked well the way it is. Look at 2012 as an example. So much jumping around and multiple viewpoints, it made the film seem overdone and not as interesting. The special effects in 2012, although far-fetched to happen in reality on such magnitude on such a short time span, is what made that film FUN. It was not logical/believable, just entertaining to watch. I guess, and I am only guessing, that he is not spoiled by elaborate & multiple plots and special effects (i.e. the Hollywood treatment), as he cited two examples that defy that routine. Overall I gave it a 8 out out 10.

Sorry, while BEFORE THE FALL had some plot problems, it is far superior to Uwe Boll's movie, which was a real disjointed mess, as are most of his movies. There are a couple of similarities, but that's about it.

When did film go from being a fun way to spend 90 minutes to a need to experience something "different" or "edgy"? It is called entertainment. Don't insult people's intelligence simply because you didn't find a movie that they enjoyed to be groundbreaking. So what? This film held my attention, but it doesn't make me a moron.

Get over yourself.

Bam said the lady.

You stole my title thread
MEDIOCRE AT BEST.

The director seemed puzzled into doing a:

1) slasher film
2) end of the world film

When they collide the chaos is sure, as yet with every "twist" it becomes clear his mind is not made up as to what the heck he is trying to accomplish, so the film goes nowhere.

the countless TV SCENES blurry all the time and the UN announcement was done really poorly.

I was bother by the pointless "scenes" of the town in chaos and the characters going nowhere.

I do think as a slasher would make more sense, but please STAY AWAY of the end of the world plot line.

As you comment of

"beautifully shot and well acted."

I strongly disagree, because no one really seems to be doing a good job and they just stare at the camera doing not much. Alejandro specially was really dull most of the film.
Also a lot of mistakes, the girl gets shots and she goes back untouched to the house.
BTW why all the trouble of getting soap to wash his hands (the killer)
It was boring to say the very least.
I was foolish into thinking the movie will make itself better, shame on the director

reply

I don't think this film entirely accomplished what it set out to do. But it is definitely NOT a slasher flick.
After giving it some thought it does work on some levels.

We have the character of Ale...a sort of apathetic, sullen, repressed and far from likable character. He sees the world in the bleak landscape of the world we see around him. He and his mother live in a struggle of a hand to mouth existence in a starkly meaningless environment. We are given the means of a past tragedy to fill in the gaps of just why he is shut off and just going through the motions and why his life is so joyless. He has nothing to believe in anymore.

Now the psychopathic child killer is easy to figure. Such a sociopath would never allow an opportunity to pass. And he got a free one (a pass) to roam and do as he pleased.

Yes, it happens to coincide with the announcement that the world will be ending. But what Ale seems to discover during these last days is himself...his purpose for living and the beauty that is life. He could lay down and take it or he could discover the part of himself that has been lost and protect what he finds he still believes in. Things still matter to him! This is what he discovers.
Even the part with the beautiful woman he had once made fun of does brings a certain symmetrically to the story. He never would have admitted how he really felt at the beginning of the movie.

Ale is smiling at the end because he found what it might have taken a lifetime to discover... if at all.
