(Spoiler Alert) What do you think Andy did with...

...The money. Do you think he paid the debt that he owed? Do you think he really learned his lesson?

Tough to say, how long would it have been until 'funnymouth' found out about Rueben dieing? I mean, the plan was to kill the kid, if the kid's still alive to pay the gambling debt, where the hell is Rueben? Would they kill Andy on the spot? I wondered about it too, but It's best leaving that stone unturned...

reply

I don't think Andy would have repaid the debt. I think he would have sat on the check for a day or two contemplating his next move and then the funnyman would have caught up with him (one of the five other guys who wanted the job). I've known guys like Andy my whole life and they don't turn around.

I think Reuben scared him enough to straighten out his life...I like to think he paid off his debt with the money and moved on with his life!

reply

My guess is he got the check to funnymouth and took off to start a new life somewhere else, perhaps as a Disneyworld employee!! lol....
btw I thought R Quaid was fantastic and this movie is underrated....

Who ever said the plan was to KILL him, only Reuben did who knows if it was even true, what good is someone who owes you a lot of money if dead. I believe the plan was to scare andy and set his life back, by giving him the money to repay "funnyman" as you can tell that Reuben felt bad about "letting him go" and paying off Andy's debt the first time as a teenage and that it helped lead Andy to making him the person he is today. Reuben felt that if he gave him the money that his conscience was free and whatever Andy did with it was up to him to either set himself straight or to continue his ways.

reply

It all depends on what Rueben did before finding Andy. Maybe Rueben told FunnyMouth his plan? Maybe Rueben went ahead and paid FunnyMouth what Andy owed him before finding Andy? The money he gave Andy wasn't a huge amount of money but it was enough for him to start over in life. I think Andy quit smoking, called that girl, got a job and quit betting. The experience he went through should've been enough to turn him around. Then again, some people never learn... ever...

What a great flick, though!

i found myself wandering if Rueben is his father?, as to the question as what he does with the money, he puts it on "lucky gambler" in the fourth at 10-1. Degenerate gamblers don't change.

reply

sorry to say I know that fact first hand. guys like andy don't change... even if it costs them everything.

I resent the term degenerate. As a gambler myself I also fall into a bad streak and i dont realize when it is time to stop. It doesnt make me or someone like me a bad person. Like Andy said he never hurt anyone. The story about stealing from his grandmother wasnt true, he only owed her some money that he borrowed.

reply

and what sucks the most is, you don't realize how much you hurt those in your life..... you think you aren't hurting people, but you are.

how is gambling my money that i support myself with, hurting other people?

reply

I have no doubt he would gamble it away. Who knows maybe it will be his day. I don't think he was scared off enough. Even if he was, that wears off very quickly. He has an addiction and shock treatment like this does not work. Actually, I think something like this would add to the thrill of the chase.

First of all, it's realy good to see a healthy debate about a movie. Second, I think a good movie is the one who let you figure out some things at the end. When the end came, I was thinking: If he opens the windows and put away the cigarete, it is clear that he got the message. I'm glad that did not happen, 'cause we can still talk about what we think he did after. That is refreshing.

By the way, Randy is awesome. Scary as hell.

i think he'll pay off the debt. and visit with his grandmother and get a job. maybe even call that girl in the picture. and then about a week later he'll gamble whatever money he has away again. but it's irrelevant. he's not the protagonist, reuban is.

here's what i got from the movie; reuban's been feeling like in some small way, it was his fault that andy turned out the way he did. and it's been nagging away at him for years. and when he finds out he has cancer he realizes it's finally time to go back and do what he should have done the first time; scare the *beep* out of andy. will it really scare him straight? most likely not. but does it matter? no, not at all. reuban died knowing that if andy *beep* up again it's his own fault. he's made up for any part he might have played in andy's development.

Someone who bets his whole paycheck on a 80:1 "Egyptian fin" would blast 68k sooner than police would find dead body.

I think Reuben drummed it into Andy that it wasn't just about the money anymore, that the big boss wanted him dead. Andy would prob figure that even if he paid it back in full, he would still end up with a bullet in his brain.

And I think Andy is incorrigible - if he paid the debt off, he would be back at square one with nothing, nada, zero - not a penny to his name! He would be more likely to take the money and gamble it to try and turn it into that big score to set himself up for life (and of course lose it all in the process).

It's tough to say, but I know at the end, I was yelling at the TV through my tears, "You'd better freaking pay that debt!"
I love Jay Baruchel, but dear God did I love Randy Quaid in this.. and I just grew very attached to his character. I hope Andy realized through all that Reuben tried to show him that day that he did the right thing and paid it back... not only for himself (and turning his own life around), but for Reuben as well. It's a big effing wake up call.
Let's hope that Andy realized that someone other than his grandma DID care about him... ever since he was a dumb@$$ kid.

Perhaps Andy took the money and started a new life somewhere else but I think that is probably wishful thinking on my part.

He never changed. He was doomed.
