I demand ADV to refund my money. NOW.

Good movie by the way.

I actually liked the way it ended.
Better for it to end like that then be all sentimental and all.

I thought the ending was fantastic, personally.

It completed the theme of things not always going as you would hope.

lol i know what you meant, unfortunately life like this movie don´t work as we wanted ..

Although I wish the ending had been different the movie wouldn't have the same bittersweet effect as it does.
It's almost tragic huh?

The song from the ending has been stuck in my head for days now..it's quite beautiful.

the entire point of the movie was that the ending was .. that way. otherwise it would be some other pointless romance. its not supposed to make you happy, its supposed to make you learn. thats what launches this movie to greatness.

I would like it more that Akari would stay when the train passed like Takaki did. Akari didn't want to bother with past anymore, that is why she was gone after the train passed. But after that train scene, Takaki looked good, to move on with his life.

Hi OP! Reading the content of the following link might help. Go to the part that says "Sequence of Events in Part 3 of the Movie “5 Centimeters per Second”"

Personally, I thought the ending was perfect. Life is that way, and Shinkai wanted to make a film that resembles real life circumstances. If you look a little more closely at the ending, Takaki smiles because the girl that resembles Akari didn't look back. It's because he knows it's for the best. He realizes that he has to move on and find his happiness -- by starting again in the present.

I agree somewhat. The ending was appropriate (anything with a happily-ever-after in this case would've ruined the poetic melancholy of movie). Besides, people remember the tragedies far better than the comedies. Shakespeare being a prime example.

Still, the ending was very abrupt, no? :(

Great link, by the way! Puts a new perspective on things.

I thought the ending was amazing. Now, I should start by saying that nothing in this movie moved me to extreme emotion, but I was swept up in the feelings of the movie from beginning to end, and it was an amazing ride. I appreciated the subtlety of it, like the movie didn't expect me to ride some emotional rollercoaster, it just wanted me to care a little bit so that I would be able to see what was going on from beginning to end. The ending, to me, was where it was all tied together. I had the feeling that when they parted during that snowy day, it might very well be the last time they ever saw each other. When his note blew away and she kept her note, that told me that the things that needed to be said (via those letters) never did, and given that their lives were being pulled in different directions, all they would have once they parted were those lingering feelings for each other. So they follow the boy as he grows up, and we see how he is kind of sleepwalking through life, how his heart really was never available to any other girl/woman but her, and it takes him many years to see it himself, since he's become so accustomed to it. Then, as the final music plays, we're given glimpses of those moments in each of their lives that meant so much, that shaped the people they are today. I didn't particularly enjoy the music, it sort of jolted me out of the mood that the movie had created up to that point, but the scenes made the message clear. Some things just aren't meant to be...

I suppose refunding your payment, if you didn't hack it off the Internet, would probably cost them more in shipping than your lost patronage would.

As a romantic I disliked the ending. I think the girl should have remained faithful to the boy. Maybe Takaki will finally wake up and realize the other girl truly loves him.

That would make for a good continuation of the story.

ahaha, although I am also a hopeless romantic (as i quite definitely identify with Takaki), I didn't exactly quite not like the ending (???). And i really don't think there's anyone to blame but circumstance. Akari only did what was generally right, and that is to move on rather than hold on to something she's not quite sure of. Although it's a given that they both had strong feelings for each other, they were only just barely out of puberty. Plus, she really couldn't be sure that Takaki would stay faithful, or that they would ever really be able to meet again.

You know, the funny thing is, i watched this film right after watching (500) Days of Summer which shares the same general theme of not getting the girl you love. And although I loved the ending by leaving the audience with a fairly positive and serendipitous note, i think this ending more reflects reality. And it's that brutal honesty that i love.
