What happened to the trilogy of this movie??

It supposed to be a trilogy, the movie did well in the box office but they never made a sequel

According to Spielberg during the promotion of Ready Player One in early 2018, the ball is in Peter Jackson's court as he is supposed to do the sequel as promised. Spielberg:

"Peter Jackson has to do the second part. Normally, if all goes well, he will soon start working on the script. As it takes two years of animation work on the film, for you, I would not expect to see it for about three years. But Peter will stick to it. Tintin is not dead!"

However, Spielberg also said the sequel would be out for sure by 2015, which never happened. Considering it's already been eight years with no word on any development, and the original not likely breaking even ($135m budget + marketing vs. $374m worldwide gross), I am not holding out much hope of it happening. Movie theaters take 40%-50% of the box office take, and China takes even more. I don't think Adventures of Tintin was profitable for Paramount.

And while $374m may sound high (keep in mind Warcraft had $400m worldwide gross and still never saw a sequel), studios also look at other data points like enthusiasm levels and how fast it hit that $374m. Did it crawl or explode to get there? Was word of mouth ecstatic or tepid? Merchandise tie-ins promising or non-existent?
