The animation was a little TOO real.

i know thats a weird thing to "complain" about but if your going to try to make CG look so textured to the point it looks real why not just make the film with real actors? otherwise give it more of a stylized look. it seriously looked like real people with cartoon-ish faces pasted on them. it tripped me out.

"Long live the new flesh."

Most of the characters are OK, but yes, Tin Tin was made too realistic. If he were just a bit more cartoonish, the problems with eyelines and expressions could be overlooked. The Uncanny Valley is very tough to cross.

And this is a problem, how?

From what I hear from animators who worked at WETA, on movies like AVATAR, PLANET OF THE APES, KING KONG, and the LORD OF THE RINGS/HOBBIT series, there was more "traditional" keyframe animation then motion capture. Mocap was recorded, but used more as a reference then anything and it could be altered or augmented if it needed to be.

But on Tintin... it was a little more mocap heavy. The animators weren't allowed to really push the poses or expressions beyond the motion capture to give it more weight or expression... they were kind of just supposed to stick EXACTLY to what the actors were doing... no matter how awkward or weightless the final result was.

I hear similar stories from people working on POLAR EXPRESS and the other Zemekis "animated" movies. If Tom Hanks didn't blink in the footage, he better damn well not blink in the animation. Incredibly restrictive, making for very stiff results.

This movie is eye candy and I really hope more films are made this way!

I agree. I mean what's the point of animating a film if everything can be done using real actors and sets? Animation should be for something that cannot be achieved via normal filming techniques.

Everything in Tintin was so hyper-realistic that it's kinda pointless for the animators to go through so much trouble. Why spend 2 years developing an animation technique to accurately produce realistic looking glass of water when you can just shoot an ordinary glass of water?

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!

I'd love to see these movements done with actors and sets, except that it wouldn't be possible.

You're really missing the point, it is stylised but you don't see the point in the style?

reply

Absolutely right, TinTin looked CREEPY

The stupid have one thing in common. They alter the facts to fit their views not the other way

It was amazing.

It didn't look real, but had the same detail as reality, it allowed them to do things real people simply couldn't do.

Just enjoy it.

Ok, this a very dumb complain. I bet you think all animatipn should Be Disney Pixar style.

Bambi + Lewis Skolnick = Disney's Peter Parker
