Cavemen was just too intelligent

As soon as the first episode aired, I told my wife "This will be cancelled". Not because it was bad...to the contrary...it was too intelligent for the average viewer. It wasn't all obvious flatulence and anatomical size jokes, so people didn't think it funny. I, personally love dry, have-to-process-it humor.

It falls into the same category that "Sports Night" was in, shows for guys, assuming they are half way intelligent.

I hope one of the cable networks sees the value and humor of this show, and revives it.

reply

You think a show like this has "have-to-process-it" humor? This has nothing on Frasier or Arrested Development (the latter being extremely subtle in its humor). But I suppose its alright if you think this show is intelligent.

reply

This show wasn't to intelligent for tv and I wish for the people that can't understand half the questions on "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader" to quit saying it was.

reply

I never thought I'd see "Arrested Development" and "subtle" in the same sentence. But I suppose its alright if you think falling pianos are subtle.

reply

Are we talking about the same thing here? I don't know what you mean by "falling pianos".

reply

It means the opposite of subtle. In other words... "see: Arrested Development."

He who is tired of "Weird Al"... is tired of life.

reply

Ok, I thought you were referencing the show somehow. Regardless, AD is very subtle, as anyone can tell you (including the guy below).

reply

Simply repeating your assertion over and over will never make it true.

(For contrast see my post below, where I give AN EXPLANATION* for why "AD" was never subtle.)

You never gave any examples of why AD is not subtle. Just so you remember, you said you would provide examples, which you didn't.
You want examples that it was subtle-you mentioned in your post that something subtle requires background info for a joke. So, I'll tell you four that I can remember off the top of my head that appeared in AD:
1.)The narrator mentioning to the audience that the bad comment about Opie made by a character was a wrong choice. The narrator is Ron Howard, who played Opie in The Andy Griffith Show.
2.)Barry Zuckercorn jumping over a shark in an episode. Barry Zuckercorn is played by Henry Winkler, who played The Fonz in Happy Days, where he (in)famously jumped over a shark, where the term originated.
3.)Barry Zuckercorn raising his fists with his thumbs outstretched, looking at a mirror and saying "Aaay". The Fonz did that on Happy Days.
4.)Justine Bateman plays a prostitute who Michael believes to be his sister, but is ultimately wrong about that assertion. In real life, Justine Bateman is the sister of the actor who plays Michael.

I know those are not that funny, but that's only because you haven't seen them in context. Additionally, your definition of subtle is very narrow. In general it means, "difficult to understand or perceive" and "having or marked by keen insight and ability to penetrate deeply and thoroughly". Most of AD's jokes fit this definition, but even by your narrow standards, I was able to name four that I could immediately remember.
Now, I haven't watched Cavemen, but anyone who says AD is not funny is just plain wrong.

I blue myself.

I won't bother reading past the first sentence of your post, because it's already obvious you're too confused.

In a post below, I have given an explanation of what subtlety is and is not. My above use of the word "example" was in retrospect a miswording, and I apologize. However (although I clearly made reference to various ingrained characteristics of Arrested Development, which probably counts as an example and nullifies your gripe) episode-specific examples of why AD is not subtle will not be provided by me because - as previously stated - I didn't bother watching more than a few episodes of that unfunny, stock-character mess.

As for what is subtle and what is NOT subtle... yes, that I DID already explain. I believe it was even bolded, so you should have no trouble picking it out. Good day.

"(For contrast see my post below, where I give AN EXPLANATION* for why "AD" was never subtle.)" 1st post by you.
"In a post below, I have given an explanation of what subtlety is and is not." 2nd post by you.
So, in between the two posts, you went from saying that you WOULD explain why AD was not subtle, to just giving a definition of subtle (which, as I already pointed out in my earlier post, is too narrow to begin with). So you didn't actually say anything specific about AD.

"However (although I clearly made reference to various ingrained characteristics of Arrested Development, which probably counts as an example and nullifies your gripe) episode-specific examples of why AD is not subtle will not be provided by me." See, that's the thing: You DIDN't actually make reference to various ingrained characteristics of AD. In fact, in all your posts, you didn't say anything specific about AD, except for saying that it's an unfunny, character-stock mess. You mentioned that you never saw more than a few episodes, so maybe the situation is as someone else pointed out: you never got the subtle jokes that you seem to be so fond of. This is why I gave examples-to prove you wrong.

I blue myself.

I didn't bother watching more than a few episodes

Thank you, that's all we needed to hear. I now await your next snide remark wherein you attempt to judge an entire series based on only a few episodes. Try this: watch the entire series, then judge. Otherwise, your arguments are invalid.

Are you kidding??? Arrested Development is not stupid obvious humor. There are so many subtle jokes. You have to be unbelievably stupid to not know that. Maybe you just didn't catch them, but they are there every 2 seconds. I have seen the whole series three times and I find new jokes every time.

I never claimed to have seen all of the AD series... if you think that makes me "stupid" then you need a dictionary. (Perhaps your dictionary skips from R to T? This would explain your misunderstanding of the words "stupid", "seconds" and "subtle".) I wouldn't want to see every AD show, either... I gave it a chance, and it tried so hard to be funny you could almost see the funnyveins popping out on the writers' foreheads. Clever? Yeah, a bit more than average. Subtle? Absolutely not. Subtlety requires something of a background education in the viewer; it does not rely on shock value and sex jokes; and it absolutely NEVER involves corny narration, stock "quirky" characters and double-takes at the camera. You want subtle, I can point you in a dozen different entertaining directions; AD is not one of them.

BTW, there is nothing particularly clever (on your part OR the show's) about finding 'new humor' when watching a show or an entire season the second or third time - you already know how it ends and how actions and attitudes will drive the characters to those ends, so lots of things become ironically funny. That's true for almost ANY SHOW. (It's akin to reading the end of a book first, then acting superior when you can AMAZINGLY!!! predict the plot.) Now, I wouldn't discount the possibility that a few 'new' actual jokes might be found when viewing a TV series the third time... but it's more likely that you are just slow.

Well it has been almost 8 years since doctorstrangelove posted complete nonsense about arrested development. I bet he's watched the entire series on Netflix by now and has changed his mind.

This show was stupid as hell. There was NOTHING intelligent about it. Plus the make up was TERRIBLE!

Yes WE Can, Yes WE Can, Yes WE Can. Vote For Obama and WE CAN CHANGE!

reply

Amen brother. .You know who also isn't intelligent. FANS OF CAVEMEN.

reply

The commercials were smarter than this show. The whole thing about cavemen having the same gripes as minorities without making it preachy is very smart! The show however, was moronic. Bad make-up, bad acting. Just a waste of airtime.

I think those network executives woke up on the wrong side of the rock. Cavemen was a smart show, but I agree, maybe it was too smart.

reply

The only smart thing was that it is cancelled...

reply

The only thing different about this show compared to others was the caveman make-up.

This show had a lot of subtle jokes. My friend pointed out several of them to be that I didn't even catch.

I think overall, some episodes were hit and some were miss, but I think many people who say it isn't funny, just didn't catch the subtle jokes, like me.

Oh, and to one of you (I forgot your name), I'm not going to hold much weight in the words of a guy with a generic Obama mantra as his signature saying something else is unintelligent.

Caveman was as subtle as a rock. Everybody with a half a brain could see that all they did was change the words black men to cavemen.

Hmmmmmm...intelligent? I liked the show. Though it was not lowbrow humor, I would hardly call it intelligent (or even subtle for that matter). It was just plain silly, a spin off from a commercial.

reply

This was one the very few shows that had me laughing out loud at some of their antics. I loved the intelligence, and I think that's what scared people away.

People want to be told what to watch instead of wanting to watch something.
