In the novel, it was set up where, Rip was a habitual drunk/wife abuser and IIRC, he was found with drugs?. Did you notice where the younger of the the two arresting officers was already calling for "Wendy" Porter- they had definitely been at the home a time or two. He was definitely in violation of a previous probation and this was a "third strike". The judge definitely wanted to convey the gravity of his course of actions/lifestyle.

Actually it makes perfect sense that Rip would go back into his old ways immediately. People like that do NOT change. Prison brings out the worst in men not better and most men are worst off after being locked up for 7 years. This crap happens all the time. It is a lifestyle and people do not change. The men that are in and out of prison who find out they are going to be fathers, get released and RARELY pan out to be responsible dads. My first CASA case involved a white newborn...Dad locked up...Mom huge meth head who wanted nothing to do with the baby. CPS took the baby from the hospital and placed in a loving, adoptive home. Even though Mom was a total loser who had given up 2 prior kids, the state was still prepared to give her a chance. She disappeared...her rights eventually terminated. Dad was in touch with the CPS worker saying how much he wanted the baby and that he had 2 other kids he loved, blah blah blah. Well he could not stay out of jail long enough to even think about parenting this child and did not even call CPS worker when released. Next thing you know, he is back in jail and he did eventually agree to terminate his rights. Some people have NO business having kids. I thought the whole storyline was presented in a believable manner.
