Indeed, it does sound interesting. Can anyone tell me more about it? Is it a book adaptation? If so, how did Manoel de Oliveira come accross it?

It is a book adaptation. The doctor named in the film was one of the main investigators to prove the writings on the Rock of Dighton were not "runes" but Portuguese names and dates. He takes on the numerous incongruencies on Columbus's history to prove that he was, in fact, one of the many famous Portuguese spies working for King John II (the most powerful of his time) assuming a clearly false identity to divert Spain's attention from Africa and towards the America's, useless at the time and already known of the Portuguese. He succeded, since the treaties between Portugal and Spain put Columbus's America on the Portuguese half; the Spanish Kings "forced" Portugal to sign a new treaty giving America to Spain while Portugal kept Brasil AND Africa. That's why Columbus ended his days in chains. The book notes many inconsistencies on Columbus's "official" history, namely, the claims of his Genovese ascent based on proven Italian forgeries of the 16th century; the fact that he managed to live among the most powerful Portuguese people (he met a noble Portuguese woman from the Order of Santiago, that he met once at the church of the Order of Santiago, one of the most reclusive Portuguese orders, and married her, for which he would require the Order Master's approval - the Master was the King himself!) while he was supposedly a Genovese adventurer; the fact he returned from America to the Azores, where he was arrested as a Spanish enemy then released with the blessing of the local ruler (a member of the Royal family); then went on to Portugal, was welcomed as a hero in Lisbon, wined and dined with the Portuguese Kings before returning to Spain... according to the legend, Columbus was born in the Portuguese village of Cuba (thus the name given by him to the caribbean island), whcih was in a region called "Red Earth", a major wool production center (all known biographical details of Columbus's life), and was a distant relative of the King (as a matter of fact, cousin of both King John the Second of Portugal and Queen Isabella the Catholic, of Spain).
