Is this game actually any good??

Ok so after seeing a commercial for the game I was very interested in trying it out, so I had the online game rental place send it on over.

The game looked from the preview like my style, I liked the cute anime and the theme sounded cool to me. But I could barely stomach the intro to the game and I was pretty annoyed by all of it before the first combat round. I didn't get into the combat round at all, and honestly that is where I stopped.

I've seen great reviews so I can only assume it gets better and the highly irritating aspect of it does not return? I have not even put this game into my xbox for probably 3-4 weeks and could have returned and rented something else by now. One of my buddies said he felt the game was only so/so but again I've seen great reviews.

Anyone have some comments? I know 10-15 minutes is not much time to try out a game but it wasn't very appealing from the time I said "start new game" as I would have expected. :/

I do plan to give it another shot before putting it back into the mail but I am hoping maybe there'll be some encouragment. :) That or tell me that the reviews are way off and it's not worth my time.

Thanks!

(yes I am an IMDB buff and I don't tend to goto game review sites to post)

Wait, what exactly really irritated you? Forgive me, I'd be happy to assist, but I'm a bit confused, the combat irritated you or the introduction did?
The combat gets better with practise... I sucked at first, but got the hang of it after a couple of hours and pretty soon could fight with the best of 'em.
As for the intro... I'd have to know a bit more about why you didn't like it.

For the game in general, I enjoyed it a lot. So much I couldn't put it down for about four days (or more). It has a lot of good qualities to it, but it is not perfect.
One of the biggest flaws I can see is how straight forward everyone is with their emotions. They didn't get into that in the beginning (don't think so at least), but the game is quite chatty, with lots of cutscenes, and the occasional flashbacks to about thirty seconds ago (It only happened once really, but it was annoying).
However, there's a lot of cute scenes and emotional ones too. I had a genuine love for the characters so that helped get me through it.

I know I liked it a lot, but I imagine it's not for everyone. I'd say give it some more time, but if you don't want to, you're not missing out on the best game of the decade or anything.

The gameplay in this game i absolutely perfect! there has never been another gameplay in an JRPG this smooth that I've ever seen. the best part about it is that the gameplay changes as you progress, so it never gets boring.

the graphics are beautiful, and the soundtrack is astounding.

the characters are bland, generic, plain boring. the story is the same. the dialogue is slow paced, awful, the worst I've ever seen in an RPG. you want to kill yourself. the worst thing the game does is repeating the same thing you saw just 5 minutes before. it is the worst.

but the game is worth playing for the gameplay alone, just skip the cut-scenes.
