It's The Matrix, for grrrls

I just realized how many ways this movie parallels the Matrix, but i haven't seen discussion here before. Scott Glenn is Morpheus, they plug their minds into an alternate reality where they are superpowered. In their current reality they are controlled slaves. The list goes on.

Errr... While in the Matrix people don't know that they are being used as human batteries, and therefore are being induced into a fantasy world, Baby Doll is dissociating her trauma in her mind while being abused and raped.

reply

Lol nah. I never got that impression. It is interesting though that everyone gets something different out of this.

reply

Yeah..... No.

In SP, their aren't multiple people plugging there minds into ANYTHING. All of the fantasy sequences are the product of one person's imagination... Babydoll (or Sweetpea, depending on your interpretation).

She, and she alone goes into the fantasy worlds, imagining her team of friends with her.

So, not really similar at all, beyond the surface comparison of having multiple "realities". Even then, in the Matrix, ALL of the main characters are fully aware of the "real" reality versus the matrix-reality, while in Sucker Punch, NOBODY is "aware" of any reality other than the one they are currently in, save Babydoll.

If I'm (no longer) responding, it means you're on /ignore. I'm sure this is no surprise :)

It's not for grrrrls. A riot grrrrl director would never produce anything this insipid.

reply

Indeed. It's for girls who think they are riot grrls.

I can sort of see it, with the stylish action sequences of superhuman feats, alternate layers of mind-warp reality, and Eastern action influence, but Sucker Punch is a LOT more "style-over-substance" than the Matrix. It's not so much for grrrls as it is for...I don't want to say idiots, because one could like this movie for its fun value without being a moron, but yeah, "The Matrix for idiots".
