I have not watched it more than 15 minutes. I'm sure if we see 15 minutes of instant coprophagy the rest of the movie will be 1 hour and 15 minutes of coprophagy.
Epigonism after Tim Burton does not help because Tim never hates any character he creates, but poor Mary, Max and Co were really hated by the greedy and schizoid authors.
Ok, we all see you are very skilled at using a thesaurus. The elitist IMDB movie critic who equates a film to fecal eating after a mere 15 minutes. Tim Burton is over rated anyways douche! This was a solid flick and you were way too critical.
i didnt like this film at all but you are ridiculous for stopping after 15 minutes. you can't rate a film after that as you have not judged the full body of the work. it's like seeing a small segment of an artwork and saying you hate it when you don't know what else there is to see.
SPOILERS
personally i disliked this film a lot, i saw it last night and i was bored, got tired of the stupid surreal jokes, the music was monotonous, the characters were annoying and it was absurdly bleak. does the filmmaker think by making literally everyone die except mary (and damien who deserts her) makes us feel sympathy? because they happen so quickly that there is no chance to become emotionally involved.
Mary's mother, father and grandfather were not characters we were supposed to sympathize for much, therefore the funerals were quick and somewhat comical. But I absolutely sobbed a few times during the movie and disagree that there was not enough time to feel emotion. If you want something with dragged out emotional scenes and a happy ending you're right, this is not your movie. Try The Notebook or something OVERRATED like that. This movie is in no way overrated, it's definitely not getting the attention it deserves, otherwise I would've heard of it before I randomly stumbled across it on Netflix. Not even going to reply to the original poster because if you didn't take the time to watch the whole movie no one should take the time to reply to your tactless post.
you make some good points and i definitely can accept that a lot of people like this film.
personally i didnt laugh out loud at any moment during the film, only *beep* every now and then. lines like "...she had a birthmark on her forehead the colour of poo.." are just not funny and keep coming through the whole film.
and the film could still have failed comedically and succeeded in the shaping of its characters but i dont think it did that either. the director creates some pathos for max but by being so bleak for the whole film we don't really see what sort of person max is. when mary comes to visit him at the end and he's dead, what kind of release is that? i can take a sad ending but i just didnt feel for either character by the end, which is partly down to the constant failed attempts at humour which takes away from the valiant attempt at portraying someone suffering from aspergers and raising awareness of the nature of it.
some characters instantly grab us in films and have us on their side for the whole story, in this film i just didnt feel that and don't think this is the revalation it is being hailed as.
i watched this as an animation double bill along with chico and rita which is even less well known and deserves much more praise. the animation is beautiful, the story simple but well crafted and the music excellent. and most importantly it had at least 2 very interesting characters
some of the "funny" lines are not meant to be funny at all. the "colour of poo" was supposed to hint to you how Mary felt like poo herself, how she was judged based on her appearances.
there is such a thing as quirkiness, a window into a soul which doesn't quite fit any other mold. just because you expect something from a person, doesn't mean the story has to give it to you.
imo, the film had a poignant denouement. death as a release from what Max mostly considered a torturous existence... New York flooded with all the things that "confuzzled" him. yet at the point of death, he was able to admire the one good thing he found in his life: his quaint acquaintance with Mary. it wasn't meant to simply be a "sad" or "happy" ending, but one filled with very mixed emotions, which were at the same time resolved, since they all come to an end with Max's passing.
just because the characters in the film didn't grab one person - you, does not mean that the film failed in its premise. the characters are not your normal glamorous film characters, not anywhere near the "hero" or "common man" trope. their story is exceptionally niche, and invites the usual movie-goer to enter into the world of the lost individuals in our society who live plaintively torturous lives; yet still manage to find that spark of joy within.
The fact that you didn't watch the entire movie and you are rating means that you think you know everything is going to happen. Your rating means that your opinion of seeing the movie's plot, its characters, and character development, is what the rating is equal to. Now you haven't seen the movie so you fail at life.
It was a very good movie, and if you couldn't stand it then you must a 12 year old or at least have no maturity to appreciate a movie like this.
I liked this movie. It had lots of silent meaning inside, more than simple entertainment. People with deep understanding of human emotions can definitely love to watch this movie. Only people who are impatient and emotionless may not like it.
