Do you have to have Aspergers to like this?

Because otherwise I don't understand the appeal.

Not necessarily, although it may help you understand the Asperger mindset more easily (I have it, so I know what I'm talking about).

I'm a teacher and professor and I used to teach high school kids with Asperger's and currently have a few college students who have it. What I found was that some of the best students for creativity and abstract reasoning often had it.

I began to see it as a type of intelligence that doesn't really take into account social convention so if you could look past their odd behavior and speech, they often saw past the BS to see the world completely accurately in a way no one else ever does.

But regarding the movie... Well, I'll just say that they could have made the movie more insightful about Asperger's, more artistic, more hopeful - more something and less something else.

Even though I like, odd, artsy, non-mainstream movies, I don't see how this movie is on the top 250 - and I usually hate it when people get on a board and say 'This movie stinks! How did it get more than 1 star!' etc. But I really don't see how it got more than 4 stars, except maybe for the great animation.

The humor. The heart. The story. The music. Is that enough? Should I go on?

Can't stop the signal.

More insightful about Aspergers : It's a movie, not a documentary , there many different levels of Aspergers (Asperger's syndrome is a spectrum disorder and it's a part of the autism spectrum.... That it is a spectrum means that the symptoms and severity can vary considerably between individuals) , We can only assume that Max was an extreme case. To be fair, there was an ample amount of "insight" , as to how Max saw the world .

More artistic : A movie doesn't need to be "artistic" for the sake of it

More hopeful : I guess you didn't see the movie the way I did. All max ever wanted was a "friend" , and ultimately he got his wish , though it wasn't easy.

More something and less something else : I sincerely hope you are more descriptive when teaching your students.

Perhaps people on IMDB should stick to the movies they actually enjoyed, as opposed to ranting about movies they disliked. But I guess that's human nature, isn't it Professor ?

I don't have it and I loved it. It was funny, quirky and it was moving.
Great animation as well.

Although I think they were a bit on the heavy side with the explanation of Asperger's - first Max describes some of his odd behaviour, later we get more exposition as he is formally diagnosed - I don't think it's a movie about that condition, at all. Mary also has emotional issues, although she doesn't have any mental health concerns, aside from possible depression.

It's quite alright if you didn't think much of it, but I'd just like to point out that the movie is not limited to autism, as it touches more universal themes like loneliness, friendship, depression, etc.

I think anyone with autism disorders, mental illnesses, drug/alcohol abuse, emotional disorders, eating disorders, phobias, and so forth will still like this movie as it does cover more than just Asperger's.
