Could you suggest any movies similar to this...?

Yes, I'm looking for movies similar to Frozen River.
Especially movies that are related to "crossing border", "Native Canadian...etc".
Thanks in advance...

(btw, I've seen "Babel" and "No country for old men")

reply

Seen Shotgun Stories? It's nothing to do with crossing borders or native Canadians but it's a similarly gritty/indie style (albeit far superior) if you ask me.

Hey, thank you for suggesting the movie! I've never seen this one, and it looks intense (yeah, just like Frozen River) and interesting. I'd like to watch it when I have a chance. Somehow, it reminded me of "East of Eden" and "Good Will Hunting" a little bit. I wonder if anyone knows movies relating to crossing borders or something >_< .

reply

i haven't seen Frozen River yet, but try..
- Crossing Over (2009)
- The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005)

and Shotgun Stories is well worth checking out, one of the really decent films ive seen in a while too

reply

Maybe it's already been mentioned but Fargo is my main comparison.

Hello, krazyasskg and thenorthwood. Thank you for suggesting movies!!!

I watched the trailers of Crossing Over (2009), The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005), and Julia. These are movies that I was looking for (Shotgun Stories looks interesting as well), and now I solved my problem. I should watch these movies... Probably this week or sometime soon...

reply

Just watched both Frozen River and Shotgun Stories. I felt Shotgun Stories was inferior to Frozen River. Like others suggest, Winters Bone is the obvious suggestion. I was also thinking Undertow, but I don't recall how similar it was to these. It is rated average, but better production than Shotgun Stories.

This movie reminded me a bit of "Julia." Although not completely the same concept as "Frozen River," it also involves crossing borders (Mexico) and illegal activities that take an unexpected turn.

reply

Sin Nombre, I really liked.

reply

Definitely Atom Egoyan's "The Sweet Hereafter," which involves the aftermath of a tragic accident in a small Canadian village and a lawyer's attempt to rally the villagers to collect on it. My description can't do it justice, but it's a very sad, poetic film.

Also Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic," about drug-running across the Mexican border.

"Maria, Full of Grace."

reply

Yes, "Maria, Full of Grace" is an excellent film! I forgot that it was mentioned in this one.

Not on the same theme but very similar tone and atmosphere : Winter bones

reply

"Winter's Bone" is a great suggestion! :)

This may be kind of remote, but in "Shining Through" Melanie Griffith crosses into Nazi Germany to find her family - and has to escape to get out. It's almost like she is crossing into a forbidden land, and it's very intriguing.

Your suggestions look interesting, so I'm going to check some of them out, too. I'd really love to see "Indian Summer: the Oka Crisis", but it's not available on Amazon, and I suspect I won't find it in any of the video stores here in Australia, but I'll check out the rest. Which year or which director is "Mi Familia" from? I can't find it here in Amazon.com. :(

Yea, unfortunately that one doesn't seem to be widely distributed. I did find their website where you can email the producers to buy the film (it doesn't give a price though) http://www.cineteleaction.com/en/pages/OKA.html. There was at some point a few scenes on youtube, but I don't know if they're still up.

Crossing the Bridge (1992)

reply

This doesn't have any "border crossing" elements, but this year's Sundance Winner "Winter's Bone" is very similar in style (strong female protagonist, rural poverty, danger). Definitely check this one out.
