I didn't like him as much at the beginning but then as his character began to develop and when he got his brother the Christmas present he wanted, I really grew to like him. I agree with the person who said he was flawed but had alot of redeeming qualities. He was willing to work for his mom and help out his little brother.
And I loved what happened with him in the ending. I was just wondering though, did he build the merry-go-round? It was never explained and I couldn't tell if they had bought it or he had built it.
I agree, and remember he had reason to feel bitter and to act out.
The merry-go-round was a wonderful detail. I like to think he built it. It looked as if the seats and some of the manes were made of old tires. But maybe the father, Troy Sr., built it originally, and Troy Jr. rehabilitates it. Both Ray and TJ talk about what a great father Troy was when he wasn't a slave to his gambling addiction.
He built the merry-go-round using the brazing torch. These torches can weld using coat hangers, although slowly but cheap. The torch symbolized the one tool and skill his father gave him.

given the circumstances, i found the kid genuine & likeable, more or less from the start.
that family had a hard row to hoe. plus, he was just 15.
in fact, that was one of the best performances by a young person i've seen in quite awhile.
i grew up close friends with a kid from a large family full of boys whose father had abandoned them - so, that might be my frame of reference. they were all scruffy, uncouth - but steadfast.
He's a teenager that just had his father leave,deAling with financial stress on top of something of that magnitude can make anyone irritable,he was a mouthy *beep* But it doesn't mean he was a horrible person and he wasn't ever trying to act like "a genious"..
