Why not make her 18 during the summer before college?

Why couldn't she be 18 during the summer, instead of December? The parental consent for her marriage would have still been a usable plot device, if they sold the mom on their need to marry so they could find married student housing.

I didn't care for this movie at all, and I think it was in poor taste to have her be 17 in their sexy scenes.
