It was Jessica's actions that started it all

She was out with her friends while Max toiled away. She "cheated" first

You're right, it was her, and it was inexcusable.

Though, in the grand scheme of things, it was not just that kiss that took the marriage down for that period. Him throwing goals away, and possibly being depressed because of it, and making her responsible for his happiness really threw a wrench into all of it.

I agree with both of you - it was doomed from the start. Jessica just drove me crazy through this whole movie. Her dumb, clearly fake laugh and the awkward way she emphasized words that shouldn't have been emphasized. I most clearly remember the scene where she's talking to her mother about her doctor's bag she had when she was a kid: "It was a real doctor's bag, it was *tears up* black leather." Really? You're going to get all choked up about leather?

I agree. It was also her that walked out on him. If I'm not mistaken, she was sober when she kissed the guy. Her husband was very drunk and he got a hickey which indicates he was kissed but not necessary that he kissed her. Also she later ended up in the guy's bed but it was never shown or indicated that her husband did the same. She was an immature, flirtatious, and cheating wife. He was the mature one supporting them. He should have realized it and never gotten back with her and filed for divorce. I'm sure she would have realized after time she made a mistake. After all , she took up with a guy who showed an interest in a married woman. What does that say about his character? They deserved each other and I'm sure that he would have cheated on her later on down the road. When finally realizing the error of her ways, she probably would have tried to repair her relationship with her ex. Hopefully by then it would be too late because her ex husband had moved on with a new "faithful", mature and supportive love interest.
