Recut? Can anyone advise...?

I watched a screener of Sands of Oblivion which is being shown on Sci-fi Channel UK in May.

Reading through the reviews and comments here, it seems to me that the film has undergone a recut since it screened in the US.

According to most of the reviews, the scenes in Hollywood are up at the start of the movie in the US version. Then it flashes forward to the present day, where the archaeologists are digging up the movie set in the desert.

Yet in the version I watched all of the scenes of Cecil B DeMille and the making of The Ten Commandments appear as a lengthy flashback that occurs near the end of the movie.

The version I watched has a long scene in Ancient Egypt at the start, showing how the evil entity was buried in the sand. Then we're at the archaeological dig and the hidden chamber is being uncovered by George Kennedy and his son. It's only after much investigation that the characters discover how the amulet made its way from Egypt to America.

I was also suspicious of the lack of gore in the movie. Most of those Sci-fi Channel films are pretty grisly, but most of the deaths seem to occur offscreen here, as if they had been cut out of the film to make it more family-friendly. It's most noticeable when the scorpions attack the guy in the bulldozer and he squishes the student. You see everyone reacting in revulsion at what has happened, yet it's not entirely clear what they're reacting to. I kept expecting a quick cut to show the student cut in half or something, but we never get it.

Hope all this makes sense and someone can confirm if changes have been made to the film.

There seems to be many versions going around. Someone mentioned another version which starts with the stuff in old egypt, jumps up to a few scenes from the Cecil B DeMille era and then up to today.

But yes you are right about the bulldozer and scorpions, in the aired version you see it cut his head of, and the head in the dozer shovel afterwards.

But its not just PG'ing - but its also adding and shifting scenes around. Rather odd. Few people seem to care about this movie though, so you are unlikely to get the full story *g*
