Ambiguous ending?

Unfortunately the DVD sent for the the viewing of this movie at our Tango Club was damaged, and became all stop/go and jumping from scene to scene for the last 20 minutes. So much so that the final scene became jumbled and completely ambiguous. Please could someone who has seen the movie in an intact format enlighten us on what they understood to have happened between Gertrudis and the photographer? Thanks. Nick and Kate
