Why the comma?

Why the comma in the title?

Is it to signify that he's a surfer first, and a dude second? Stupid.

ur right.. that analysis is pretty stupid.. Actually, it's from a pretty crutial part in the movie, dude.. when "east coast" is shooting him say why he doesn't want to be in the show or do the game.. He says, "I'm a surfer, dude."

With "Surfer Dude", the "Dude" would refer to the surfer. With "Surfer, Dude", the "Dude" is referring to someone being addressed, not the surfer. It's like the difference between "Utah, John" (where we might be answering a question asked by John about where we live) and "Utah John", which would suggest that John is known as "Utah John" for some reason.

Of course, it's likely that Steve Addington would have no problem being called a "surfer dude", but as ericcallari pointed out, the title is probably inspired by the scene he referred to, as the whole gist of the film is Addington's hippie-like "life philosophy" in contradistinction to the commercial/marketing mentality of people like Eddie Zarno and Lupe La Rosa.

I have not seen nor do I plan on seeing this movie. A few years ago, I don't know if it was while browsing for movies to rent on-demand or in the movie section at the electronics store, but I remember seeing the video cover several times. My brother and I started jokingly calling it "Surfer Comma Dude." Now, every time we look up an actor's credits who was involved in this movie (the reason I am visiting this movie's message board at the moment), We make sure to point out that the actor in question was also in "Surfer Comma Dude." I know that doesn't contribute to the discussion whatsoever, but I just wanted to share that pointless piece of information regarding how weird my brother and I are.
