even better than I expected. Don't know what is up with all the haters...

reply

It was hilarious! I loved it! If people are hating ANY movie, they shouldn't even be saying anything! Whatever, I guess in the end all that matters is that I enjoyed it, it shouldn't matter what anyone else says.

This is heavy, Doc.

I love this movie. It's so laid-back, if you love surf culture and the whole lifestyle and mentality, it's a great movie.

reply

That's such bull *beep* that's not surf culture...most surfers are more than pot smoking idiots who don't do anything with their lives... this is a disrespectful stereotype to the surfing community.

It's the puppets dream, being human.

reply

This was not a good film. Marginal at best. I've been a surfer since I could walk, and we DO NOT talk or act like the poor depictions of surfers in this film. Surfers are not long haired, mother ocean loving, pot smoking hippies. We are doctors, lawyers, construction workers, waiters, teachers and all other types of people. Don't get me wrong, there are a few loser throw backs to the Spicoli days, but they are few and far between. I can safely say this film offended all surfers out there and was a gross interpretation of great way of life here in California. So for all of you "inlanders" who have never surfed, this isn't who we are. One more thing, Matthew McConaughey is a kook and doesn't belong in the ocean.

reply

I'm a surfer and my life is pretty much like the depiction in the film.

One difference about your life and mine? I'm actually happy :)

reply

You're a useless burnout?

And that's how you narrate a story.

reply

Matt, obviously you're not part of the collective of surfers you describe; doctors and lawyers etc, well maybe a waiter( Not as an inbetween job, but more as a lifelong profession, or maybe even a 24hr garage attendant). You say " Surfers are not long haired, mother ocean loving, pot smoking hippies. We are doctors, lawyers, construction workers, waiters, teachers "
Yet in the very next sentence you go on to say " and all other types of people. "
Would it be correct to assume that your definition of "all" is different to that of the dictionary? Or are these Quote "long haired, mother ocean loving, pot smoking hippies" not human beings?
Hmmm...If one was intelligent, one might've actually read the thread before one started whining! I especially like the part where you can, and i Quote " safely say this film offended all surfers out there "
I personally loved this film, not in a wow that was the most awesome movie i've ever seen, but on a deeper level, i'm not a surfer but i believe the film conveyed it's message well, that surfing is about freedom and love, not to mention a whole host of other thrills and emotions!
Dude, be happy and chill ;-)

reply

Wow, so since I think this movie was pathetic and voice my opinion, I'm not happy? You're right ( not about my being unhappy ), you're life must be just like the film. Bravo. Thank you for contributing to the downfall of surf culture and the stereotyping of surfers.

Oh, and Tony, I'm a full time firefighter. That's my job, not a waiter.

Don't even get started on surfeing being about freedom and love Tony. You're not a surfer, you really have no say in this matter and you have no frame of reference. So all that you say about surfing is null and void. But if you liked this film, fine. Just don't come to California and think it's how things are here.
And as far as...

"Would it be correct to assume that your definition of "all" is different to that of the dictionary? Or are these Quote "long haired, mother ocean loving, pot smoking hippies" not human beings? "

...yes they are. But they are not the typical surfer. Maybe in the distant past, but not now. That's a stereotype we have been trying to get rid of and our fathers before us.

reply

You need to relax man, just because your experiences with surfing haven't been like this doesn't mean you can hate on the people who surf with this kind of lifestyle. No one made you the guru of surfing and obviously you haven't surfed with a whole lot of different people because about half of the people I've ever surfed with have had this kind of attitude. Especially the ones who live on the beach and live their life based around surfing.

We understand the movie offended you but don't come in here and preach.

reply

I like how you say "Relax man". What the hell does that mean? Doesn't sound sound like he is freaking out to me, and it doesn't sound like he is hating on the people portrayed in this film, just the film itself. I totally understand where Mattinhb is coming from. One more thing, "don't come here and preach"? WAKE UP! That's exactly why they have these posts! For people to rant and rave and preach.

reply

So, why do you surf? Is it just an alternative to working out at the gym? Just making the scene? You seem uptight. Are you one of those guys who think they own whatever part of the beach they surf? I hated that attitude. Lived in San Diego County for years and surfed all up and down the coast there and, unfortunately, ran into enough of those "locals only" types for one lifetime.

I'm a surfer and I still don't think either of us have a say in this matter. It's kind of redneck of you to tell Tony that...

reply

This movie moved me. To another room in the house where something else was playing...Love Guru I think.

Ok, it wasn't that bad. And wasn't trying to be something that it wasn't.

Loved the Greg Noll boardies.

reply

I am a surfer and have been for 20 years and I am NOT offended by this movie. Contrary to "Mattinhb", there are a lot of surfers who are a lot like the characters in this movie. I'd say most "surfers" would rather be known as a surfer than by the profession that pays the bills. I sure have a lot more fun surfing than working! Surfing is more and more about image than substance (to quote Eddie Zarno from the film; "You're in advertising. Ben and Barry never paid you to surf" about sums up a lot of surfing today). Surfing became a huge industry in the 90's and commercialized surf culture to the point where there isn't much real cool left. Surfing used to be kind of counter culture but it's main stream now. Just look out into the crowded line ups and you'll see what surfing is today.

reply

Wow, I didn't realize how upset all of you were going to get because I voiced my own opinion of this film. Do you all have some sort of vested interest in this film? The way you're all defending it (while bashing me) seems to make me think so. I didn't like this film, and I said why. That's all. It's funny how you all can get so worked up over one person's opinion. And you tell ME to relax...So for all of you who have talked so much trash (because we don't agree)...kiss my ass!

reply

The only thing that could be said to upset me (if anything) would be that you spoke for all surfers saying it offends us. That's a big assumption. Other than that, it's cool cause I can totally see how a lot of people might not like this movie. There's always been people trying to live down the whole Spicoli stereotype ever since it first appeared. I think it's funny (the stereotype) cause some surfers love it and some hate it. I must admit, though, that I know way more surfers who use the word "dude" than not!

I don't think Hollywood will ever make a movie about surfing that will satisfy all surfers. It would only succeed if all the surfers in the world were clones with the exact same opinion on what surfing is to them! I must say they got at least one thing right in this movie and that is that a lot of surfers I've known get depressed (in one way or another) if they don't surf for a while (due to no waves or just can't get out there for some reason). Ask any surfer if they've surfed lately and if they haven't they'll sound pretty bummed, like life is out of sync because they haven't been able to catch a few waves!

So don't bash on Mattinhb just cause he doesn't like the movie. At least he surfs and gets to do something most of the world doesn't! If anybody realizes how ridiculous it gets trying to surf in HB then maybe you might have a clue in understanding his view.

reply

I don't surf, but I've known and worked with hundreds of surfers over the years, on both coasts, and from many nations. And my opinion about what surfers are like is: ... all of the above.

They can be rich, poor, intelligent, dumb as rocks, good, bad and in between. The film shows a couple of types, out of thousands of "types". Just when you think you know what surfers "are", along comes one that totally ruins that stereotype. All they have in common is surfing. Period.

Anyway, that's my opinion.

reply

terrible and pointless film. ive surfed and lived at the beach forever. there are plenty of pot monkeys like matts character. i hate them. the lifetime surfers i know hated this film also. based on reviews of the film 0% on rotten tomatoes, i'd say non-surfers hated it too. i was shocked to see some people liked it. theyve gotta be pot monkeys themselves.

oh and a malibu local would not have a texas accent. yeah some people surf in texas, but the waves are so tiny and infrequent its not even really on the map of places to surf.

reply

one thing is for sure, true malibu locals (transplants are not true locals) do not speak with a hick Uvalde, Texas accent like mathew m.

sadly there are a ton of surfers who want nothing more to do than surf and smoke weed. its a gay as hell lifestyle. there are respectable surfers out there though. 1 more bit of info, most surfers suck at surfing! shocking i know but even guys that have surfed all their lives are still at white belt level. we call most of them "longboarders"

reply

I masturbate to this movie... That's all i use it for
