What's with the oldtimey cameras?

When Tarzo is attempting his apnea record in the pool the camera guys are using an old film camera with a wooden tripod that people would have used in the 30s or 40s. Also, when he's sitting on the tree platform the journalist is using an old photo camera that also seems to be a relic from the era, juding by the size, shape and the unusual flash mount. Also, Tarzo was wearing an oldtimey swimming suit as well.

I get that these anachronisms are supposed to be a throwback to the high times of the Mob (i.e. the 30s and 40s), but they don't really fit into the weird but still grounded style of the rest of the movie. Strange choices.
