Panned by every critic

Every review of this film I've read has panned it. I've rarely seen such universal agreement amongst critics. Is it really that bad?

I might be a bit biased as I'm a big Robin Williams fan but I thought it was quite good. Alright, it's not the best film in the world but there's some laugh out loud funny bits & an easy going storyline. Don't know what these critics expected from a Disney kid's film!

Oops, I made a mistake!

too predictable and everything is cliche

One bit of advice: NEVER take a critic's word for ANYTHING. One of the biggest movies in the history of cinema was panned mercilessly by critics. That film was called Star Wars. And, I've found that most films evjoyed by critics are pure crap, especially if the film is nominated for an Academy Award. Those two details will almost guarentee that the film of garbage and should be ignored.

Ignore the critics. Watch the trailer. If it looks enjoyable, go see it. If you love it, great! If you hate it, at least you know not to waste any more time with it.

Personally, I found it highly entertaining. Yes, it was predictable (ala 2 Men and a Baby), but it was stil funny.

Hmm... Critics were not particularly mean towards Star Wars. It got a lot of great reviews even. And Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture Oscar, too (and won six plus a Special Achievement Academy Award).

I agree that critics often seem to be watching a different movie than the typical movie-goer, but I'd have to agree with them on this film. It had a couple of very funny scenes, but should have dropped the whole look-how-important-family-is-to-me-now storyline. Some of it was so cornball, it was embarrasing to watch. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it except to families with very young kids.

reply

True. I would only recommend it to idiots who have kids that are even more stupid. Kids may watch, too (even after lobotomy). Someone compared this film's professional criticism to the one of Star Wars. Now, there's an IDIOT. Star Wars is actually a GOOD movie.

Old Dogs was as bad as 97% of Hollywood comedies. It only gets the *beep* because of its "above the title" -actors. I particularly felt really sorry for Williams (Academy Award winner). He should know better. And Rita Wilson? Tom Hanks said nothing to her?

We all know that Travolta is not a good actor, so there goes that. Did he destroy the film in the end? That I don't know.

reply

Um...you haven't watched "Sunset Blvd." and "Annie Hall," I can assume?

reply

Are you insane...???

STAR WARS -- like other such well-made "popcorn movies" as RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, JAWS, E.T., GHOSTBUSTERS and BACK TO THE FUTURE -- may have gotten panned in a couple of places but was on the whole ADORED by the mainstream critics.

Just found a review from 1977 of Star Wars that singled out Harrison Ford's performance as 'terrible overacting'

'Old Dogs' deserved each one of those comments. It is bad even for the crappy standards of the live-action flicks produced by Disney.

It's a shame than Travolta and Robin Williams have accepted to appear in this major stinker.

2/10

It actually wasn't that bad. Just skip past the predictable plot . You get a few good laughs.

I agree. I think the critics were a little harsh on an extremely inoffensive semi - kids' film.. I quite liked the scout camp and the beach side gathering to share grief, when Travolta's face was beset by meds-fuelled swelling. But there were some very pedestrian moments too.

I watched it on tv, not expecting that much but I was pleasantly surprised. It is definitely a flawed movie, and gave me the sense that the writers were just making stuff up as they went along. (Yes, I realize that's what most writers do; but it SHOULDN'T look like that's what they've done.) Spookyrat above pretty much summarizes my take on the movie. If I had paid seven bucks or whatever to see it in a theater, or even a couple of bucks to rent it, I'd probably have been greatly miffed, and wanting my money back; but on free tv, it's worth a look and provides some solid laughs, plus a little heart. The scene involving Robin Williams and a poorly aimed shotgun made me laugh out loud--hysterically out loud.

I think that it's worth seeing more than once. I've rated it 6/10.
