Peter, Gwen and if the series had continued...

First of all, Rest In Peace: Spectacular Spider-Man :(

Second, if the series had not been discontinued, if it could have had just one more season, and only one more season, would you the fans, the loyal viewers, have accepted the series ending with Peter Parker/Spider-Man with Gwen Stacy (RIP comic book Gwen), as opposed to ending with him with Mary-Jane Watson (RIP: Spidey & MJ's comic book marriage)?

Particularly in THIS series canon, sure! Peter and Gwen were probably the cutest pairing out of all. Mary Jane, though played out as being the Peter's true love in the comics, 90s cartoon and the movies, didn't feel right for Peter in this one unless they were willing to do something major(like Gwen's death), but she WAS pretty good as "Gwen's pal", her little motivational counselor nudging her towards Peter and trying to wipe away her doubts. Peter and Liz was alright, but not as sweet as Peter and Gwen.

For this series canon, Peter & Gwen had to be the cutest because they were obviously the "destined couple", all other couplings merely being speed-bumps along the way for an ending that now sadly we will never see. :(

Mary-Jane of course was the "destined" girlfriend in the 90s cartoon, comics & movies because she had married Peter/Spider-Man by then - a marriage that was then annulled in one of the most bizarre storylines ever written ONE MORE DAY (Damn You Quesada!!!) and Gwen of course had met her untimely fate way back in the 1970s, so she was left out presumably because no one really wanted to touch on the whole issue of her having to die (though I guess if they wanted to they could have changed it to her simply moving away after collapsing under the stress of being stalked by the Green Goblin). Then she popped up in the third. I'm guessing one of the reasons TSSM used Gwen and her dad Captain George Stacy because they hadn't really been touched on in earlier animated shows so it helps distinguish this series from the earlier ones.

And Gwen's death doesn't really work if you don't care about her as a character. Wolverine & the X-Men made the mistake of pretending to "off" Jean Grey and even after she turned up they didn't give us much of a chance to get to know her, she was just a plot device without a heart or soul.

This strikes me like Smallville's Clark and Chloe relationship. I'd just rather prefer her over Lois any day of the week.
I love my canon but you can't deny how the SSM team handled the characters so perfectly...maybe the show cancellation was a mixed blessing because seeing poor Officer Stacey die followed closely by his daughter would have been too much...still if the show had been allowed to go down that route it would have paved the way for so much better story arcs.
We need more smart and well written shows to pave the way for television animation here - we're just so far behind Korea and Japan in terms of storytelling and character development...better thank the FCC I guess.

Unless we would see some serious turn around I don't think Peter and MJ would hook up in the series. I mean people are thinking way to much about the comic book. This show had its own universe and things could be very different.

In fact I'm not even sure that they would kill of Gwen in the first place. I mean Gwen is always killed that is as essential to Spider-Man as the fact that Kenny always dies in South Park. So what if they just this once did not kill Gwen? I think it could have been brilliant.

Then unlike say Reed Richards or Scott Summers it seems that Peter is simply not meant to be happy. Kind of like Daredevil.

I guess it would be possible if the series had its 65 episodes + Straight to DVD movies (Sometimes I think about the fact that 65 episodes + movies were planned and I usually gets so depressed that I just need to stop for a while) that Gwen would die and Peter end up with MJ but I would like it much better if it wouldn't happen.

When the choice is between a American and a Russian film, always choose the latter.

Hells yeah I would have.

I was a fan of all of Pete's love interests on the show though so I would have been okay with whoever he ended up with.

Absolutely. Personally I felt that Gwen was just right for Peter. They had the right chemistry.

I think Gwen and Peter were going to be the main couple in here. This was the first series not to limit her potential as a character by forcing her into the tragic first love role.

The Death of Gwen Stacy was a landmark point in comic history NOT ONLY because she was killed BUT the Green Goblin also died that night. Fans forget that he was supposed to STAY dead forever. It was a big moment for Green Goblin to do something no villain at the time had succeeded in doing and he paid for it. It cemented his role as the most iconic Spider-man villain and let Gwen die as Peter's first true love.

One thing that is important to be known though is that the idea behind the Death of Gwen Stacy came about because at the time the writers wrote Gwen and Norman both into a corner. Gwen hated Spider-man because she thought he killed her father. This was making their relationship go nowhere. Norman was constantly relapsing into being the Green Goblin (who had discovered Peter's identity) and subsequently getting amnesia. It happened a few times and was starting to make Green Goblin lose the threat he had. It's easy to see how these two ideas came together and the rest is history.

Here in TSSM; however, I just don't see the writing getting stuck to the point where the characters of Norman and Gwen would be only useful to be killed off. Norman is evil no matter if he knows Peter's secret or not. And he's evil no matter if he dresses as the Green Goblin or not. As for Gwen she'd have no reason to EVER believe that Spider-man would kill her father here and she's too smart to ever think he would since he's saved her at least 3 times in the series and is actually favored by Captain Stacy.

^Great points!

Thank you!

An extreme twist would be to have killed off MJ this go around.

Also, George kept implying to Spidey that he knew who he was. Do you think he would have let Gwen date a superhero?! Since Spider-man faced danger constantly from super villains, as a father I can see how he wouldn't want that for his daughter. Would've made for some interesting dynamics...

Thread_Killer_of_IMDb is out there. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until your post is dead.

I actually really liked Gwen, and felt they should be togther. Although I was surprised that I actually started liking Liz. I didn't care for her character at all at first. It seemed to me Pete was just attracted to her because of her 'cool' status instead of because of who she was.

She definitely grew as a character, and I felt bad that Pete was such a dick toward her, but I was hoping he would leave her for Gwen.

I assumed Pete and MJ would end up together because they always seem to, but so far there was no real indication of that. It would have been really interesting to see if they were going to take SSM in a different direction.

Anyway, this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist.

Well Weisman said he wanted to do darker stories as the series went on. So I do think they may have ended up killing Gwen off in the DTVs he wanted to do. They would be able to get away more stuff on those. Batman Mask Of The Phantasm for instance. They were allowed to kill off characters such as the mob bosses and the fights were more violent than on the TV series.(IE Joker gets a tooth knocked out and even bleeds) The TV censors would never have allowed that.

Sick of threads "Megan Fox should play this!"
