Just saw this at AFI Fest! (Spoilers)

Just came back from the screening at AFI Fest and boy, my mind is trying to wrap around the candy corn treat of Tokyo!

It has three separate vignettes each by a different non-Japanese writer/director. Each story takes place in Japan and have elements of magic realism.

A brief review of each vignette:

“INTERIOR DESIGN” by Michel Gondry
Charming. Witty. But utterly tragic. Only to become charming again. You will never look at a regular chair the same again.

“MERDE” by Leos Carax
Leos Carax’s masterpiece. Morbidly hilarious. Has you rooting for a xenophobic who commits genocide against even more xenophobics. Mind boggling and provoking. The best statement on xenophobia ever. One of my most favorite movies of all times as of now. Denis Levant has probably one of the greatest acting performances ever.

“SHAKING TOKYO” by Joon-ho Bong
The director of THE HOST returns with this film. It’s charming love story about a loner who decides step out into the real world after 10 years of hiding in his house. When he comes out, he realizes it’s a world of loners. Funny and charming. It’s very good film, but it doesn’t compare to the sheer monstrosity of story in the two previous vignettes.

I caught this at the Santa Fe film festival last week. Each story focuses on characters who are outsiders in Japanese society. Enjoyed "Interior Design" and "Shaking Tokyo" the most. I found "Merde" the least engaging and the humor fell flat for me. Overall, it's worth a look.
