I don't think the family knew he was seeing Hannah, but they were aware that he had become distant and was acting differently during the time he was seeing her. This was just another of those instances, so they knew Michael would end up back at home.

I assumed the farther knew that Michael was with someone and sooner rather than later it would end. The father was interesting in that he seemed withdrawn and detached but not unaware - a lot like the man Michael became.
