Who knew Zac Efron was so talented?

I was pleasantly suprised at how good ZE is in this movie. He's a very good actor, and he's obviously been on the basketball court more than a few times. I have a whole new respect for this guy.

I wasn't so much "pleasantly surprised" as I was "shocked as hell". I've only ever associated Efron with High School Musical and thought he was only capable of looking pretty on screen but as it turns out he is actually proper hot and has exceptional comedic timing. He did very well with the more emotive scenes too. I think (surprised though I am to admit it) he will go far, he really is very talented.

Same reaction here. I avoided High School Musical, partly because my younger sister was obsessed with it but mostly because I was already three years older than its cast when it came out LOL. I've also never been a fan of "heartthrobs". But seeing Efron here is shocking. He's really a very good actor. It's a shame that he got associated with the pretty boy image catering to screaming 12-year old girls. He has more potential than that.

this movie itself was unexpectedly hilarious. all of the characters were perfect

I hope Efron can pull off a de Caprio with his career..
It would be nice to see him make a good "non chic flick movie"..

A silent guardian, a watchful protector.. A Dark Knight!

I actually really think he could; he has more to fight against than DiCaprio did though. Before becoming an international heartthrob following films like Romeo + Juliet and most notably Titanic, Di Caprio had done some hard core acting in films like The Basketball Diaries and What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination.Efron on the other hand rose to fame and heart throb status with the success of one of his earliest roles(obviously, High School Musical) and was quickly typecast. His looks took precedent before he got a chance to let his acting talents shine through, much like Johnny Depp in his Jump Strrt days.

Pre-Titanic/R+J, he also had This Boy's Life (1993), the harrowing biopic of writer Tobias Wolff, who was emotionally/physically abused by his stepdad (played by Robert DeNiro.)

You may just prove to be right. I wasn't willing to watch the movie despite HBO India promoting it heavily on their FB page (http://www.facebook.com/HBOIndia) just because of Efron's "just a pretty" boy image. But I have to admit after this, that he did a good job and made me forget that this was the person my cousins swooned over in the High School Musical series.

In fact, I liked the movie so much that I am watching it again on HBO in India right now!

No redemption for Robert Pattinson and Justin Bieber yet though.

I always knew he was better than High School Musical. My friends all said he was not talented at all and after HSM he wouldn't be forgotten, but I said he would get bigger and better roles. I'm super happy I was right :)

This is a movie I would NEVER see in a million years, and one bored nite, I watched it...I agree, he did a great job. Not only was he funny, but he got all the emotional "notes" right on, too. Not to mention, and I'm of the Leslie Mann age category, he is so very nice to look at. When Mathew Perry came back on, I was like, uhhhh.

I got to say that when I saw this movie on the Directv schedule I passed over it time and again, but than being bored one day flipped on the TV and it was on, so I watched it. I was beyond surprised, and I enjoyed the movie a lot. Zac Efron was really good, and the rest of the cast were good as well. Fantastic movie, I really enjoyed it from beginning to end. Take care.

This was just randomly coming on TV so I watched it because I wasnt doing anything on a Tuesday night...and it wasn't bad for a one time watch. As a huge fan of the BTTF series, I liked the little similarities and Zac Efron's acting was decent for this kind of role. I havent seen him in anything else and from what I had seen of him on the HSM posters I thought he was just some pretty teen kid...but I think he has acting potential. Plus he looked really good in the movie! I don't know if its ok to crush on this guy..lol im 22.

I agree. He seems to have chops; comic timing, as well as being believable in the serious scenes... who knew? Good for him. I hope we see more of him outside the Disney Channel.
