Land of the Astronauts?

Why was it called that?

I watched it titled as The Black Limousine.

The movie within the movie was called Land Of The Astronauts so they could use spacey sounding music and have some cool, greenscreen sets for them to goof around in.

There is a scene in the movie where you see the moonscape set up just like when the astronauts landed on the moon. Conspiracy theorists think the moon landing was faked. The main character is having delusional dreams. The overlapping of what is real and what is imagined is key to the films theme and storyline. Hollywood is our movie town where dreams are put on the big screen. Just like the moon landing might have been nothing but a hollywood production...

Good question. The company that produced the movie (actually one producer) owned rights to a story called Land Of The Astronauts by Horton Foote which had nothing to do with the story... at least originally. They slapped the title on temporarily.

As the script was being written... the director decided the film within the film should be called LOTA (land of the astronauts)

The film within the film (LOTA) had a storyline of an astronaut and crew escaping earth due to mankind destroying the planet and finding a new planet to live on. Mimicking the main characters world imploding and starting fresh. This again had nothing to do with the Foote story.

A lot of this was lost during filming.

The title LOTA stuck around for a long time until it was getting ready to be released on home video. At some point they realized it wasn't working best as a title for sales.

It was then changed to Black limousine. Originally the story was more about and linked more with the limo and the main character's depressing and haunted life in the limo including the previous driver's killing of his wife inside the limo.

A lot was not shot from the original script.
