I'm not quite sure if the ending is a happy one or a sad one. Penelope Cruz's character has cancer, has her breast removed to take it away, and then what? Will she survive?
The ending was quite abrupt and off putting. I thought, well at least she's not dead, but how long will it last?

I tend to think it will finally allow them to have a fairly normal relationship, in that he will no longer be consumed with jealousy and the thought of losing her to a younger man. She also realizes now that no one else can love her the way he does.

Film's end: they had no balls to push it to the full wet and handkerchiefs (balls) like in Love Story.

It would be more appropriate and perhaps interesting if she was terminally ill already and dead off screen, so he could have realized his foolishness and egocentric life for not having really seen what was the reality, and stay alone for his remaining days.

I heard he died in a car accident a few months later. She survived. She now lives and works in NY.
